The Agriscience/Intro to Agriculture course helps students acquire a broad understanding of a variety of agricultural areas, develop an awareness of the many career opportunities in agriculture, participate in occupationally relevant experiences, and work cooperatively with a group to develop and expand leadership abilities. Students study California agriculture, agricultural business, agricultural technologies, natural resources, and animal, plant, and soil sciences.

In this activity, students will work in collaborative groups to create 9M x 9M models of plant and animal cells. Class population can be split into 2 or 4 groups, with half the students constructing animal cells and the other half constructing plant cells. Students must organize and assign duties, provide materials for this activity, and write a written report. They will also give "Cell Tours" to other students and/or classroom guests.

Cell organelles are often studied in isolation or as a part of a big picture lesson on cells. This activity combines knowledge of cell organelle functions with changes that can occur in DNA that causes these organelles to not work as they should. This assignment would best fit in after students have learned about cell organelles and are studying genetics and mutations. The task requires them to write the story of a sad cell: a cell whose DNA has had mutations occur that cause it to have organelles that no longer work correctly. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Students play a quick and easy game to review the organelles inside both plant and animal cells. Students will use definitions to identify the appropriate cell structure and its role inside the cell. They will also identify if these structures are present in both plant and animal cells.

Students identify the main organelles involved in carrying out cellular and physiological processes. They will also select the organelle that they think is the most important for that process and provide a reason for their selection.

Cell organelles are an important part of our high school cell unit. This assignment allows students the opportunity to learn more details about a specific cell organelle or structure, create a 3D model and commercial to share with the class as a means to teach the class about their structure.
