Kindergarten Cluster 5 Centers
Math centers are intended to provide students with practice of recently-taught content, as well as spiraled review of concepts and skills from previously-taught Clusters. This specific list of activities focuses around the Cluster 5 concepts of counting to 100 by ones/tens, counting forward from a given number, counting to answer “how many?”, comparing numbers, addition, decomposing numbers 1 to 9, making 10, and conceptual subitizing.
| Hundred Chart “Count-On” Challenge
Materials: hundreds chart, counters
Work in pairs. Partner A places the counter on a number. Partner B identifies the number and counts on from the given number until Partner A says, “Stop!” Reverse roles and repeat.
Variations: Rather than choosing a number, roll two dice to determine the two-digit number. Rather than choosing a number, roll two dice and find the sum. The sum becomes the starting number. |
| Show Me the Number
Materials: number cards (0-20), a variety of manipulatives
Place number cards face down on table. Select a card and manipulatives. Count out a set to match the number selected.
Optional: As students work, ask: How many will you have if I add one more? How many will you have if I take one away? |
| Subitize ‘n Sort
Materials: conceptual subitizing cards
With a partner, work to sort the cards by quantity. When finished, mix-up the cards and take turns sorting individually.
Optional: After students sort several times, ask: Why does it get faster and easier to sort each time? What tips do you have for quickly and easily finding the quantity on each card? |
| Card Compare
Materials: deck of playing cards, split into two equal piles
Each partner takes one pile of cards. Partners simultaneously flip over the top card from the piles. The partner with the larger number keep both cards. If both cards have the same value, show the next card and compare. After all cards are gone, the partner with the most cards is the winner.
Variation: Switch rules so the partner with the lesser value takes both cards. |
| Ladybug Addition
Materials: Dice, ladybug work mat
Roll the die and put the matching amount of chips on one side of the ladybug’s back. Roll again and put the matching amount of chips on the other side. Add to find the total.
Optional: Provide students with addition and subtraction word problems. Students read a word problem and use chips and ladybug mat to solve. |
| Decomposing 1 to 9
Materials: number cards (1-9), squares of paper in two colors, blank paper
Choose a number card and record at top of the paper. Use the two different colors of squares to show ways to decompose (break apart) the given number. Glue squares on paper to show thinking. Record numbers to match (e.g., 5 and 3).
Optional: Repeat with a new number. |
| Shake and Spill Decomposing
Materials: recording sheet, crayons, red/yellow chips, cup
Spin a number. Count out a set of red/yellow chips to match the number, and place chips in a cup. Shake and spill chips onto the table. Draw a picture to show the part that is yellow and the part that is red. Record numerals to represent the parts and total amount. Repeat.
Note: Kindergarten students are not expected to record equations. Instead, consider having students use the words “and” and “same amount as” to describe their decompositions. For example: Three and two is the same amount as five. Three reds and two yellows is the same amount as five chips. |
| Spin & Make Ten Materials: spinner labeled 1-9, paperclip, pencil, counters
Spin a number. Represent the number on a ten frame using counters. Find the missing amount needed to make ten. Record. |
