Students will collaborate in groups to plan and present a puppet show using their hand puppets and illustrated animal booklets. Students will learn about animals around the globe through growing awareness, research, and sharing of their perspectives about animals and their particular habitats. In this first introductory lesson, students will listen to discussion, view images, and then research animals from various regions of the world using internet images and an assortment of animal books provided at their work tables. After the class discussion and individual study of resources, students will choose one animal as a focus and become familiar with its physical characteristics, habitat, and fun facts to share during a future lesson. Students will select items from a simulated landfill in the school gym to use in building an instrument from recycled materials through a group relay race. This lesson is an introduction to the term of poverty. The students will begin with creating a Think Tank on poverty. After the creation of their Think Tank, we will share the vocabulary that was developed. Using the most often shared vocabulary, we will use these words to build a meaning and understanding of poverty. This lesson strand is two in a series of two lessons that go through the steps of the Engineering and Design Process as needed for the construction of a prototype. The prototype is a musical instrument created through recycling landfill items. Based on the Landfill Harmonic from Paraguay, the motivation for the unit is GEDB: Music and Poverty- The Landfill Harmonic. The students in Paraguay (Latin America) live in a landfill and use the items to develop an orchestra. The unit clearly defines poverty and the resourcefulness that one must meet when living in a poverty culture. This prototype is the final product of a cross curricular, multicultural unit based on poverty and music with a direct connection to math, science, technology, engineering, arts, and multiple media skills. Through the video clip from "Landfill Harmonic", students will learn about poverty in Paraguay and how their community used items from a landfill to create instruments. This provided opportunities for their children to be involved in an orchestra and rise above their poverty-stricken life.Students will also hear a story “My Visit to a Mexican Landfill” that will enlighten them to poverty in other parts of the world. They will answer four specific questions about living in poverty.
