In this lesson students will make the connections between poverty and high death tolls in earthquakes. Students will understand that the effects of natural disasters are worse in impoverished places than in wealthy places. Students will compare and contrast the effects of an earthquake that hit Haiti to an earthquake that occurred in San Francisco. Students will examine graphs to obtain information in order to make the connections between poverty and high death tolls. During this lesson, students will discover how social media plays a vital part in today's society. This lesson focuses mainly on the usage of cell phones and text messaging used during the Nigerian Riots.
