Relating the water cycle to computer programming by using simple robots to show the connection between the natural and digital worlds.

Students work collaboratively to research and record information about different spinoffs of space exploration. Using the information they find, students then write a script to be produced into a podcast or vodcast.

Students make their own 3-D models of the Big Dipper using readily available materials and examine their models, observing the 3-D constellation from new perspectives.

 Students will listen to a close reading of The 3 Little Pigs over the course of 3 days.  (Many versions are accessible via NC Kids Digital Library.  Teacher discretion as to the story version.  Personal copy or online versions can be used.) After each read aloud, students will have the opportunity to engage in The Engineering Design Process to create a new dwelling using materials of varying physical properties.  Students will write to tell about their new dwelling design using sentence frames and an anchor chart for support.  Finally, students will present their new dwellings and read their informational writing to reflect their knowledge of physical properties.  Student informational writing should reflect physical properties such as size, color, shape, texture, weight and flexibility per the NC Kindergarten Science Standards.

After learning about the 3 States of Matter, students can be tested using a pop quiz to check for understanding of the subject, how they transfer from one state to another and also how they are able to illustrates the states of matter either through a drawing of a real life example of the state of matter or the state of matter as a particle. The bunny has forgotten to deliver an egg. Design a structure for the bunny to safely deliver the missing egg without the bunny being seen (drop from above) and without the egg breaking.

Students will be given a variety of materials. They are tasked with building a structure (ie: parachute, cage, etc.) to safely drop their egg to the floor without it breaking.

Marshmallows are too big for Lego people to throw. Your kingdom has come under attack and must defend itself. Design a catapult using the WeDo kit and motors, that will launch a marshmallow with enough force to knock down your opponent’s wall, before they down yours.

 Eggbert has volunteered for the first egg-head mission to the Moon. The problem Eggbert faces is that the landing on the Moon’s surface will be very quick, and his space ship will crash. To ensure the success of this mission, your engineering team will need to design a safety restraint device that will withstand the crash.Your team has a budget of $800.00 to spend on the materials for the design. You must discuss what materials you will purchase, keeping within your budget, and record the items in a spreadsheet. You must also ALL agree on a team design. If Eggbert does not survive your first attempt, you may have time to redesign the restraint system. Your goal is to be the team that spends the least amount of money and keeps Eggbert from cracking.
