Scratch is a free introductory coding program that allows students to create interactive stories, games and animations using colorful blocks in a drag and drop interface. Once students learn the basics of Scratch throug independent exploration or direct instruction they are ready to begin creating projects that allow them to demonstrate their learning in fun new ways. Using animated illustrations, storytelling, and interactive games students can share their learning across all content areas. When combined with a Makey Makey electronic kit, students can personalize their Scratch programs by creating input devices that enhance their projects, such as interactive posters like those found in museums.

In this STEM lesson, students investigate the ways in which ancient technologies — six types of simple machines and combinations — are used to construct modern buildings. As they work together to solve a design problem (designing and building a modern structure), they brainstorm ideas, decide on a design, and submit it to a design review before acquiring materials to create it (in this case, a mural depicting it). Emphasis is placed on cooperative, creative teamwork and the steps of the engineering design process.

NASCAR is an excellent teaching application for students. STEM in action. During the sessions, you will learn how STEM is applied in real-world examples in NASCAR, from friction inside an engine to calculate the fuel added to the car. You will have the opportunity to learn to use household items for experiments and engineering, outdoors as a teaching environment, and the technology (OG and new) to amp up the engagement.

We are excited to present read-alouds, book trailers, book talks and activities for the 2022 North Carolina Children's Book Award Nominees. These lesson plans are provided by NCCBA committee members for librarians and teachers to use. Children may vote for their favorite title if they have read at least 5 of the 12 nominees. Voting begins in March and ends in April. Go to the NCCBA Blogspot to submit your student's votes! It's also time to start nominating books for the 2022-2023 North Carolina Children's Book Awards!  Nominations are submitted by the children of North Carolina in grades K-6th.  Teachers and librarians may help children enter their nominations, but no teacher or librarian should enter their own favorites.  That's what makes this award so special - the books are nominated by kids and voted on by kids to determine the top two books of the year!  Go to the NCCBA Blogspot to start nominating!Kids may nominate more than one favorite.
