In this lesson, students create neighborhood maps.
Students explore a map of a community park. Students use the map to begin to learn spatial concepts such as identity, location, and symbols.

This course was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 1st Grade Social Studies.
In this activity, students measure the perimeter of their favorite room in a house or other structure and then create a scale-sized map of the room.
Students learn about the people in the school community, their jobs and job descriptions, and identify locations of those jobs within the school. Students also learn how these jobs contribute to meeting the needs of the school community.
In this lesson students learn about relative location of things in the classroom and build map skills. They learn about jobs in the school, build map skills as they interpret maps, and create a simple map of the school showing important places. They follow directions to locate places on the map and describe the locations relative to other locations.
