This template supports STEM teachers and librarians in working collaboratively to create lessons that build science practice and STEM inquiry skills in alignment with state and national science standards, and that address the Common Core literacy shifts around close reading and building textual evidence.

For this lesson, students brainstorm several examples of plots, settings, and characters and randomly select these elements to create their own short stories.

Students work in groups of 2 to create a sound room out of a collection of materials provided by the teacher and then selected by the students. Students will test their sound rooms periodically to determine if their structure has the ability to dampen or even completely eliminate a tone, or ringtone emitted from a cell phone that is turned to max. The goal is for students to rearrange and recombine materials until they have achieved sound cancellation, dampening the waves emitted from the cell phone to a degree that the tone is inaudible. The efficacy of the sound rooms will be checked by a decibel meter on an iPad or Android device (free app easily acquired in an app store). Students will check the decibel reading before their structure is placed over top of the cell phone and then after - comparing the drop in decibels. They will track their results on a document as they hopefully observe the efficiency of their structure improving over time and with each test. One important constraint, the students are limited by a budget. The materials will be “purchased” from an in class store utilizing “real world” pricing.

Students will receive a choice board of different activities and will have to choose one.  After choosing their activity, students can be placed into small groups to work collaboratively or can work independently. Each team/student will be presenting to either the whole class or their small group.

In this lesson, students use previewing to activate their prior knowledge and set a purpose for reading. Using a strategy called THIEVES, which is an acronym for title, headings, introduction, every first sentence in a paragraph, visuals and vocabulary, end-of-chapter questions, and summary, students are guided through a preview of a nonfiction text. After guided practice, partners work together to use the strategy to preview a chapter from a textbook.

Students will explore the Silk Road region of China to better understand the influencing factors of its history using VR experiences and other research tools. They will then create a THINGLINK to share what they learn. Lesson Link

In this lesson, students gain an understanding of appropriate search skills for locating information while using the Internet as a reference source. Students will search for answers for content-specific questions after identifying keywords and phrases to use as they access different search engines on the Internet.
