Students will construct a zoo exhibit based on one from the book using the materials provided, complete with zoo animal.You must use ONLY the supplies provided. The zoo exhibit must be constructed on a flat surface and it must be as accurate as possible based on one from the book.
Students construct a bridge that will get Cupid to his destination and withstand all of his Valentines. They will build a bridge with only candy hearts and toothpicks.

Each group will build a different building 2-level wing of the team's school in one day but can only use the materials provided to the team. Each wing must include several classrooms for drones to survey and land.

Design and build a sleigh using a WeDo kit that will pull a specific measured weight.
In this session you will learn about great multicultural literature selections that work well with STEM projects for elementary students. It is essential that we purposefully select and include multicultural resources with our students, and engaging them with STEM tasks deepens the learning. I will share ideas for the projects and materials that may be used to create the products.

A student team of engineers, design a way to transport water from Point A to Point B without wasting or spilling any water.
In this session, teachers will learn to break down barriers that keep them from including STEM routinely in their classes whether they be in person or virtual. Topics such as time management, curriculum connections, assessments, and material availability will be addressed. Teachers will leave knowing that STEM activities can be manageable, low cost, and curriculum driven!

In this session, you'll see actual, real-life examples of engineering / design thinking projects in classrooms just like yours. In this session teachers will explore try out some of the science challenges. All lessons align to the NEXT Generation Science standards. These are easily transfer over to the NC Science standards. English Language Arts is easily integrated through the documentation tool. Students do reflective writing about their design and solution. These lessons can meet science standards in K-5. First Lego League Junior prepares them for more advance robotics and engineering. The FIRST Core Values helps students to work as a team.

Using Sphero robots in the classroom to enforce mathematical concepts and connections related to geometry, trigonometry, and basic algebra and introduce students to basic programming concepts. Students can explore through different tasks that deal with rate of change, distance formula (Pythagorean Theorem), angle of rotation (basic trigonometry), and related topics while applying those concepts to a physical activity. The Sphero tools also allow students with different programming experiences to tailor their work to fit their skill level from basic (block programming) to advanced (Java). The tasks also promote collaboration between students to problem solve issues on the fly as they work to reach a common goal or compete to outdo other groups.

Students will plan and design a rocket that will travel the greatest distance. Students will consider what they know about rockets, energy, lengths and distances while using a budget to build their rockets.
STEAM ideas centered around popular children's books. Ideas will be shared on engineering projects to be done with these stories, as well as science, technology, math, and science connections as well. Sample engineering plans will be shared, as well.

This session will highlight several successful social studies lessons and strategies utilized by the presenters to engage high school social studies students (grades 9-12).
