In this interactive, students click on a letter to see it in uppercase and lowercase. They click on the letter again to hear its sound and words associated with that sound.
Students can work together to brainstorm and create lists of verbs for each of the letters of the alphabet in this interactive activity. Then, choosing one verb for each letter, or letters of their choice, they can create pages for an Action Alphabet book. Each page includes an illustration and a sentence using the verb in context or students can create a chart with all of the verbs listed.
In this activity, students investigate textures of various objects. After making texture rubbings, students will choose an appropriate texture adjective to match each rubbing, using alliteration.
Students will work in small groups to plan and create a Makey Makey project showing the life cycle of a butterfly. Students will ask and answer questions about key details of the butterfly life cycle. Students will use verbs when giving information about key details.
Students will learn nouns by an interactive sorting game. Students will compete with each other by putting noun cards down on the floor by catergorizing them by person, place, animal, or thing. Students will have to read and sort the cards. The student with no noun cards first, wins!
After exploring ways that people use resources from our environment to provide for basic needs and wants, students will generate an inclusive list (using brainstorming and research) of many natural resources that people use to meet their needs and wants. Students will create a poster to illustrate their generated ideas. Then students will present their posters to the class or a small group. The teacher may also ask students to consider the use of one natural resource over another in a given situation. Students will consider the best natural resource (s) to use in various situations based on wants/needs, sturdiness, usefulness, sustainability, durability, accessibility, availability, cost, etc. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to Family Message Journals. The teacher introduces journals by demonstrating the process of writing a letter. Students are then led into composing through guided writing and finally independent writing of messages that they will bring home for family (or others) to read and write a reply. Messages focus on classroom learning and activities in which children have participated at school. A letter to families is included so that they understand what they are expected to do with the children's daily journal messages and why.
In this lesson, students choose their own reading material, respond to reading in a journal, and talk about their books daily in small groups. The teacher guides the work through structured prompts and by rotating participation with the groups. Students read at their individual levels, while heterogeneous grouping provides peer support. This lesson is a structured guideline for helping students learn to think about the books they read, and to ask questions about books shared by other students.
ABCya! presents its fifth children's storybook for the classroom. It's called Marvin Makes Music, an original work by Michelle Tocci. The story is about a frog that is sad because he cannot sing like his friends, until one day when he gets a new musical instrument. This is a great storybook to share with kids using an interactive whiteboard.
