In this lesson, students draw a coordinate plane on graph paper in two steps: (1) Draw and order the horizontal and vertical axes and (2) Mark the number scale on each axis. Given some points as ordered pairs, students make reasonable choices for scales on both axes, and locate and label the points on graph paper.

In this lesson, students extend their understanding of the coordinate plane to include all four quadrants, and recognize that the axes (identified as the -axis and -axis) of the coordinate plane divide the plane into four regions called quadrants (that are labeled from first to fourth and are denoted by Roman Numerals). Students identify the origin, and locate points other than the origin, which lie on an axis. Students locate points in the coordinate plane that correspond to given ordered pairs of integers and other rational numbers.

Educational Use
In this interactive, students use logic and mathematical skill to place aquatic animals at locations on a Cartesian graph with cardinal directions. Then, they determine both the vertical and horizontal distances between points. The riddles in the interactive, including one that requires an understanding of rate, have randomized values so that students can practice placing points at different locations and calculating different distances. The accompanying classroom activity provides a review of concepts related to determining the distances between points on a Cartesian graph and a response sheet to help students work with the interactive

This is a two-part activity on ordered pairs, distance, reflection. Part 1 consists of four stations where students will identify ordered pairs points, plot points, and determine distance and reflection. During part 2 students will plot points from part 1 and then code a mini sphero robot to move to selected points.
