This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 2nd Grade Science in Earth Systems, Structures and Processes.

This resource accompanies our Rethink 2nd Grade Science Unit #3. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.

In this lesson, students design the cycle of seasons as a circular calendar.

This is the fifth lesson in the unit Weather Trackers (http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/unitplan/11468.htm). This is a fun and entertaining lesson on temperature. Students learn about temperature using hands-on activities and games.

Students will learn about new friends: Manju from Nepal, Wadley from Haiti, and Jednel from Tanauan. Students learn how different natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons, have destroyed schools in various parts of the world due to their catastrophic nature, leaving children struggling go to school and get an education. These are cross-curricular lessons that include the teachings of science, social studies and the language arts. These lessons were taught in English during social studies/science content time.This lesson was developed by Gabriela Bermingham as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

This activity is designed for students to learn about the the changes in day to day weather and to pose questions about changes in daily temperature. The students will gain experience using thermometers by measuring temperature. The students will use the scientific method to ask questions, predict, observe, collect data and make conclusions. Students will observe the weather conditions and outdoor temperature twice a day, both a.m. and p.m., and record it in their science notebook on a chart. Then on a class graph, continue to record daily morning temperature each month for the students to predict and draw conclusions from how the morning temperature will change throughout the seasons.

In this lesson, students record the high and low temperature daily and observe change over time. Students create a graph to show their data. They analyze the data they collected each month and use it to make predictions about the weather.

In this lesson, students describe weather conditions using common tools to measure the weather and a science notebook to record their data. Students will continue to obserce the weather each day of the school year, looking for new developments in the weather and changes due to different seasonal changes.

In this lesson, students will explore temperature and weather in their local community and in Europe. Students will also conduct experiments and make their own barometers.

In this lesson, students will tack barometric pressure, wind direction, temperature, and clouds. The clouds will record daily readings in these areas and attempt to formulate patterns to use in forecasting the weather based on these elements.

In this lesson, students investigate how the weather changes from day to day.

In this short unit, students observe, discuss, and investigate the concept of weather. First, students participate in a class discussion centered around the question, "It is ___ degrees outside. What should I wear?" Next, students investigate temperature, sunlight, and snow with various experiments. Finally, students compare theri weather with weather in a different location.

This lesson is the eighth lesson in the unit Weather Trackers (http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/unitplan/11468.htm). The activities in this lesson serve as a comprehensive review for the unit on weather. Students review weather concepts through interactive games, role-play and experiments.
