Students consider the social and political motivations of David Alfaro Siqueiros to help them analyze his self-portrait. With his writing as their guidance, students write and deliver a persuasive speech and create a propaganda poster about a current issue of interest. Through links included in the resource, students explore an online MoMA feature about propaganda art, view a slideshow and discover Robert Runyon's photographs about the Mexican Revolution, and visit the exhibition feature entitled The Cubist Paintings of Diego Rivera: Memory, Politics, Place.
Students will engage in learning activities of 'Creating and Making' and 'Exploring and Responding'. The 'Creating and Making' activities include: plein-air drawing; creating a tour itinerary; digital landscape; sights and sounds journal; and making a film. 'Exploring and Respondin' exercises include: art and science; painting pictures with words; imagining a new land; building on the landscape tradition; perspective; compare and contrast; the legacy of von Guerard; and appropriating von Guerard.

Students will learn about Nelson Mandela and Apartheid and imagine what it would be like to walk in the shoes of Nelson Mandela. Students will then research a global leader who has gone through adversity and made a positive difference in the world. They will honor the person through researching and creating a clay shoe sculpture using three or more symbols in their sculpture to tell the story of the person and include a quote that speaks to them personally. Students will create a video or presentation to explain their sculpture and tell about their individual. Students will print a code for their sculpture that links to their video. The sculptures will be displayed with the code for the school and community as they are invited to the Art Walk of Shoes.
