In this lesson, students discover the impact that flooding has on people's lives, and how science and technology can mitigate its effects and help find potential solutions. Working in teams, students design and build a model of a flood-proof home for their family on the fictitious isalnd of Watu. They will consider how flooding affects the whole community and work out where the best place for a home would be.

In this lesson, students use ImageJ to create a 3D representation of a digital elevation model, then calibrate the image from known elevations. Using a slightly altered version of the digital elevation model (DEM), students compare what the elevation of the glacier might look like 100 years from now and explore how a DEM can be used to analyze changes in elevations over time.

Students use a stream table set at various inclinations to investigate how flowing water changes landforms. Then they will choose three Martian landforms that seem to have been shaped or created by flowing surface water and discuss how they might have formed. Finally, students examine images of Mars to see if there are any features suggesting the presence of flowing water at one time or another.

In this lesson, students will use sand to build a mountain and then use a straw and watering can to simulate wind erosion and water erosion. Students will make observations and then propose ways to slow the erosion and/or speed the erosion. Students will be able to relate the erosion processes to weathering and sediment deposition.

The wakelet site features videos demonstrating hands-on activities for students to complete at school in small, socially-distanced settings. Activities may also be adapted for at-home learning. Some activities incorporate an outdoor component, acknowledging the need to balance screen time with green time to support mental health.
