This project is done with research and using Minecraft: Education Edition. Students will be working as a group of settlers that have landed on the coast of Virginia, survive while building the Jamestown Colony. Some research will be done pre-building in order for the students to get an idea for the purpose of the settlers coming to Jamestown. After the project is completed students will reflect on working in a hostile environment while working virtual strangers to survive and thrive in a new land. The lesson aligns with 5th grade Social Studies but could be used by other grade levels with minimal remixing. It will require all students to have access to the game and computers capable of running the game.

Students will also review how using key effective keywords will give them better results.

Kahoot! is a free tool for using technology to administer quizzes, discussions or surveys. It is a game based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time. Multiple-choice questions are projected on the screen. Students answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet or computer.

Children love to build! The Keva Planks have become very popular to use in classrooms. KEVA planks are about 1/4 inch thick, 3/4 inch wide and 4 1/2 inches long.You build structures by simply stacking the planks. There is no glue and no connectors. Keva planks creations are meant to be temporary. Students can create beautiful works of art, towers and much more and half the fun is destruction.

This fun Web site is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they take a close-up look at biodiversity in a city park. The site opens by telling kids that, despite appearances, a great deal of biodiversity exists in cities. From tiny mites to mighty trees, thousands of species thrive there. It then takes them to a slice of life from a thriving city park, where they are asked to find 10 hidden critters living alongside the trees, plants, and insects. Each time they locate one of the tiny critters, they are rewarded with a quick look at its importance to the habitat.
