This document is the About the Cluster document created by the authors of the NC2ML Instructional Frameworks. Read this document prior to teaching the cluster in order to get insight into the clustering of the standards, mathematics to be taught, and important considerations.

This 2 unit of number and operations lessons explores numbers to 1,000 on a line or grid through 2 hands-on activities and 2 worksheets.

This 2 unit of number and operations lessons explores more multi-digit addition and subtraction equations through 7 hands-on activities and 9 worksheets.

This website includes several activities to learn and practice place value, including a school day count routine, games, and problem-solving tasks.

Students work in teams to follow criteria and constraints to design their own container that holds pompoms (popcorn). When this is completed they need to test and record how many pom-poms their container will hold. Students find that counting and organizing groups of ten is the best way to do this. They record their information on a data analysis sheet and the following day they compare their numbers and amounts.

This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 2nd Grade Math.

Students will label an analog clock to the nearest 5 minutes, represent time by drawing hands on the clock, and determine if the time of day is a.m. or p.m.

Students learn to count by higher numbers using a whisper/loud technique that emphasizes the underlying number pattern. For example, when counting by threes, the student whispers, ?One, two? and then says (or shouts!) ,?Three!? When combined with cross-body movements, this activity helps the student learn the basics of number grouping that forms the basis of multiplication and division. Students can skip count by fives, tens, and one hundreds.

For this assessment task, students skip count by 1's,5's,10's, or 100's to fill in the missing numbers.

This resource is from Tools4NCTeachers.  In this lesson, students determine whether or not they have enough money to purchase popcorn in addition to movie tickets. They then determine whether or not there will be change and if so, how much change they would receive. Printable student sheets are provided in this lesson.

Families can also find tips for working with their children at home, digital games, videos, and books. This file contains both English and Spanish versions of the Cluster 2 Family Letters.

A Common Formative Assessment (CFA) provides a snapshot of current student understanding. It serves as a checkpoint, and may be used to guide future whole and small group instruction. This CFA addresses 2nd grade, Cluster 3 standards.
