Students will analyze Petrarchan conventions within the three sonnets in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Students will evaluate whether Juliet adheres to or rejects these conventions.

In this short story, a boy named Billy Weaver needs to find lodging in Bath, England. He goes to a boardinghouse. The landlady is an odd woman who compels Billy Weaver to stay with her at the boardinghouse. As the story progresses, clues are given as to the whereabouts of previous guests on the fourth floor.

This grammar unit students will explore the way speech dictates how others see you and treat you. Students will explore specific diction, word choice, vernacular and various sentence structures in order to observe how language can be both inclusive and exclusive.

In this lesson students rewrite a catalogue description of an item for sale in which the new ad reflects a change in the voice of the writing.

In this story, the main character, Margaret is affected by the loss of her father and then the loss of her best friend who moves away. As she adapts to that change she discovers new talents and new friends. In this lesson, students participate in learning clubs, a grouping system used to organize active learning events based on student-selected areas of interest. Guided by the teacher, students select content area topics and draw on multiple texts—including websites, printed material, video, and music—to investigate their topics. Students then have the opportunity to share their learning using similar media, such as learning blogs.

This lesson introduces students to the way lines work in poems and create texture. Students will learn the difference between end-stopped lines (lines that end with punctuation) and enjambed lines (lines that break where there is no punctuation, that continue in the reader's same breath). The lesson will also guide students toward listening to the natural cadences of a poem when reading it aloud.

In this lesson, students combine vocabulary exploration with word play by planning their own vocabulary parade, modeled on the activities in the text after a read-aloud of the picture book, Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster. Students brainstorm a list of vocabulary terms from a recent unit of study and then design concrete ways to illustrate the terms. The presentation of terms can be in the form of a parade, or a video, which might play during parent conferences or open house.

This lesson was designed to help students gain social studies/history content knowledge by using textual evidence to answer text-dependent questions.

In response to Harriet Tubman’s request for a letter of commendation, Fredrick Douglas wrote a testimony of her character, hard work, and sacrifices for the sake of freedom from bondage while marking the differences in their leadership styles for the common cause. In this CCSS lesson, students will explore this history through text dependent questions, academic vocabulary, and writing assignments.

In this lesson students will decorate the outside of a small box, using words and pictures to depict how they see themselves and decorate the inside to show how others see them. Students then present an oral presentation explaining the box's decorations.

"Life Without Gravity," a nonfiction selection, is designed to help students become familiar with the characteristics of an expository essay and how weightlessness affects the body. Students will read, critically analyze and write about a series of poems dealing with light and darkness.

Students will research lighthouses of North Carolina using print and digital resources and create a digital presentation on the NC lighthouse of their choice. After studying basic electric circuits, students will use cardboard and Makedo tools to design and build a model of this lighthouse and wire it to light using a kit of electronic supplies. Students will showcase their final products with friends and family using digital photography, Google Presentations and a screencast video on Flipgrid or another platform of the teacher’s choosing. Students will submit a Seesaw documenting their experience with the Design and Engineering Process while building their lighthouse.
