Design a prototype of a solar oven given a cardboard box, ruler, pencil, scissors, aluminum foil, and plastic wrap. Test the oven to see if a s’more is able to cook inside of it.
This resource is a multiday 3rd grade unit on Soil and Plants.
Students will use engineering materials to create a topographic map then program Sphero to be a tour guide through the map.
Using the provided supplies, students are challenged to design, create and test a marble run. The marble-man will drop from the marble run “water slide” into a water “pool”. Using a yardstick, measure how far from the front edge of the container “pool” the marbled landed and record. The goal is for the marble to go as far into the “pool” as possible.
Students will learn the relative sizes of the planets in the solar system, as well as Pluto, asteroids, and comets, by using a scale model. They will learn that different solar system bodies are made of different materials and will consider different ways to classify them.
Design and build a sleigh using a WeDo kit, K’nex or similar, that will pull a specific measured weight.

This unit is centered on designing a shoe for a customer. Students decide on a particular type of shoe that they want to design and utilize ideas of force, impulse, and friction to meet the needs of a particular customer. Force plates are used study the relationship between force, time, and impulse to allow students to get the mathematical models that allow them to make data informed decisions about their shoe design.

Bottle flip ratio activity - Learning what ratios are, students will be challenged to engage in a bottle flip ratio game, where the students will flip a water bottle 5 times and will have to predict how many times it will land straight up. Then, after completing the 5 rounds, they will write the ratio for the actual results. To ‘amp’ up the next challenge, the students will have to brainstorm how much more water they should add to the water bottles to see if they can make a more accurate prediction of how many many times the water bottle will actually land upright. They will see if their prediction ratio is closer to the result ratio.
