I created this practice sheet after teaching middle/high school Newcomer ELs the present tense and present continous. This is also a great activity to help scaffold descriptive writing. 

The purpose of this activity is to increase spontaneous language in a low anxiety environment. Students will explore their surroundings and find small objects to identify. Then they will use an alphabet chart to identity the first sound.Then they will use an alphabet chart to identity the first sound and match it to the corresponding letter/s. Students will use color words to describe the physical appearance of the object.

3rd-grade lesson plan implementing the 7 steps for pre-teaching vocabulary by Calderon and Slakk (2018): 1) Students repeat word 3xs; 2) Teacher says the word and reads the sentence exactly as it is in the text; 3) Teacher gives dictionary definition; 4) Teacher gives student-friendly definition/example; 5) Teacher highlights one feature of the word- that it is polysemous, cognate, tense, prefix, root word, etc.; 6) In pairs, students ping-pong 5-6 uses of the word in a provided sentence frame (most important step); 7) Teacher assigns opportunity for students to practice the new words in writing, reading, exit tickets.

I created this activity to help students practice sequence writing and to explain something that happened in the past. Feel free to change to the present tense! This works with elementary students or Newcomers of any age.
