In this lesson, students will look closer at Swift’s essay to understand more fully how he works toward his purpose. Students also compare this essay with other satires they have read so far.

This resource provides a lesson wherein students will seek to apply the B-D-A (before-during-after) reading comprehension strategy while they examine resources pertaining to disabilities.

This is a great activity for the first week or two of school to help students to learn to colaborate and work on the speaking skills that they will use throughout the year. Students will also have an opportunity to share something about themselves and to learn about their classmates. They will be taking a picture of a person, place, or item that is important to them. They will bring in either a picture or the picture on their phone to share. Students will present in small table groups so that they get some practice in a small group before they have to start presenting to the whole class. 

 In this activity, students will select a person, place, or object that is meaningful to them and create a thirty-second story that explains the importance of this place or object. This is a great activity for the first week or two of school to help students learn to get to know each other and work on their presentation skills. As we well know, public speaking among many people’s greatest fears, so in this assignment, students will create video presentations that allow for editing and revision which will hopefully lower the stakes of the presentation.

This PBL is designed for second grade students. To help understand our school and how to keep the students and staff healthy, the students will investigate different ways to prevent influenza germs from spreading. A Number Talk is a brief routine (about 10 minutes) focused around developing flexibility and fluency with numbers. Through regular opportunities to work with dot images and expressions, students develop an understanding of number relationships and structure. This supports the development of early fluency skills.

This PowerPoint contains presentation slides for daily Number Talks, as well as directions and videos for implementation. Teachers may facilitate the Number Talks on these slides, or use them to inspire their own Number Talks based on student need.
