In this first lesson of two, students understand how a folk talke changes when its language is translated to another culture.

Students understand why the plot and setting of a story changes as it is translated into a different culture. Students also discover what literary elements of a story are universal and important to the overall meaning of a story.

Aesop's Fables is a collection of tales by the Greek storyteller Aesop. Most of the tales included here were translated and edited by Reverend George Fyler Townsend (1814-1900) in England and published under the title, Aesop's Fables. Townsend's translations were influential on many subsequent collections of fables. Some of the tales included here were taken from the book How to Tell Stories to Children and Some Stories To Tell, by Sara Cone Bryant and published in London in 1918. In some cases, we have included both Townsend's version and Bryant's version of the same tale.

This source provides a two day lesson plan that focuses on reinforcing themes, retelling a sequence of events, comparing/contrasting stories that are told in different cultures. It can be used more than one day easily by changing the assigned fairy tale of focus. The extension activity gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and application of story elements and standards taught.

In this lesson, students will pick out the main theme for the book and discuss the elements used to make up the story. They will use the iPad App Story Creator to illustrate and write their own story. Students will learn how to take a paper illustration and put it into a digital story and add their own text. This can be adapted to 4-6 grades.

Students become familiar with fables and trickster tales from different cultural traditions and see how stories change when orally transferred between generations and cultures. They learn how both fables and trickster tales use various animals in different ways to portray human strengths and weaknesses in order to pass down wisdom from one generation to the next.

The lesson will focus on how the internet breaks things into small pieces for transmission by reading and decomposing fables into parts and then creating and writing new fables using a graphic organizer.

This compilation includes well-known classics, such as "Sleeping Beauty", "The Three Bears", and "The Ugly Duckling", along with many lesser-known stories. This collection includes stories from a variety of cultural traditions.

In this component students are exposed to a quality piece of literature with themes and bigger ideas focusing on childhood poverty. They will continue to develop a deeper understanding of the bigger issues while building compassion for others living this way. As students read The Most Beautiful Place in the World by Ann Cameron, they will practice summarizing each chapter and describing Juan using a Character Map. Two key strategies are utilized to guide conversation and understanding of the bigger ideas and text themes. First an anticipation guide is used to introduce the big ideas and character perspectives found within the book ("Anticipation Guide" 2016). The second strategy used is a Triad conversation protocol, where students work in teams of three and follow a system that leads them through academic conversation.
