Students will read as a whole class or small group Extra Credit by Andrew Clements in conjunction with Wonders Unit 3 (4th grade).  Teachers will assign the google slides to each individual as a reading comprehension completion activity.  Students can use these slides as a springboard for book discussions.  Technology enhanced culminating activities are included in google slides 9-10 for transfer of knowledge at the end of the novel study.  

In this lesson, students will investigate the term commodity and its relationship to agriculture. From previous work, students know that agriculture includes food, fiber, natural resources and that farmers produce different items. Students have learned that depending on where people live, there are different crops and foods consumed. In Unit 1, students begin to build background knowledge about the women’s suffrage movement and the role that Susan B. Anthony played in it. Students will read a variety of informational texts as well as primary source documents. In Lessons 1 and 2, students are introduced to the topic through examining a timeline on the history of voting in America and an excerpt of a speech by Susan B. Anthony. (They will revisit the speech throughout the module.) Throughout the first half of this unit, students will read and summarize several informational texts about Susan B. Anthony. Students will also learn to use glossaries, context clues, and deconstructing parts of words as strategies for understanding unfamiliar academic and domain-specific words. This is followed by a mid-unit assessment of RI.4.2 and RI.4.4. Students then continue learning about Susan B. Anthony’s role in the suffrage movement, comparing firsthand and secondhand accounts of key events in the history of voting in America. The end of unit assessment focuses on RI.4.2 and RI.4.6: Students compare firsthand and secondhand accounts of a modern-era historical event (the inauguration of Barack Obama).

The lessons in this unit provide you with an opportunity to use online resources to further enliven your students' encounter with Greek mythology, to deepen their understanding of what myths meant to the ancient Greeks, and to help them appreciate the meanings that Greek myths have for us today. In the lessons below, students will learn about Greek conceptions of the hero, the function of myths as explanatory accounts, the presence of mythological terms in contemporary culture, and the ways in which mythology has inspired later artists and poets.

With this interactive, students read a story on a the board and click on each student to see the connection he or she made. Then students click on the answer to show the connection that was made.

This lesson is designed to engage students through reader's theater during the guided reading lesson. Students can practice fluency using an alternative format.
