Students will work with subtraction within 10 by taking 1 away from a number.
In this assessment task, students play a memory game and subtract within 20.
In this assessment task, students add within 20.
In this assessment task, students roll two dice then they write and solve an addition number sentence. Students also explain how they got the answer.
In this assessment task, students look at number cubes and write an addition equation to find the sum of each pair of number cubes.
This formative assessment determines students' fact fluency when adding and subtracting within 20.

This is a task from the Illustrative Mathematics website that is one part of a complete illustration of the standard to which it is aligned. Each task has at least one solution and some commentary that addresses important asects of the task and its potential use. Here are the first few lines of the commentary for this task: Materials The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle The students work individually or in pairs. This parent guide supports parents in helping their child at home with the 1st Grade Math content. Within the folder you will access Parent Guide PDFs in FIVE Languages: Arabic, English, Hindi, Spanish, and Vietnamese to help on-going communication with caregivers.
This resource accompanies our Rethink 1st Grade Math Operations and Algebraic Thinking unit. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) videos are designed to support states, schools, and teachers in the implementation of selected math standards. Each video is an audiovisual resource that focuses on one or more specific standards through examples and illustrations geared to enhancing understanding. The intent of each content-focused video is to clarify the meaning of the individual standard rather than to be a guide on how to teach each standard, although the examples can be adapted for instructional use.
Students will work in groups to create a Keva Plank bridge that spans an 8.5 inch “river” (sheet of paper). The bridge needs to span the river (touch in the middle) and can have no blocks touching any water. Students will record data on how many blocks they plan to use + how many they actually use in their attempts, as well as the most and least used in the class. Students will also reflect on group designs as well as how to improve their own work.
This problem helps students to practice adding three numbers whose sum are 20 or less. It is an open-ended problem with many solutions.
Students use numeral cards and mathematical symbol cards to practice simple addition and subtraction, work with number sentences, and develop systematic work habits. Students are challenged to find as many ways as possible to arrange some or all seven cards to create true statements.
This resource is a video tutorial which teaches students how to add 5+3+6 using properties of operations.
This video adds 7+6 using a number line.
This video adds 8+7 by making a group of ten.
Parents are able to see student work as soon as it is posted. In this activity, students will solve a math problem with three integers and explain their thinking using SeeSaw.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach second graders an overview of addition (sums to 10).
