This resource accompanies our Rethink 5th Grade Math course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning. 

This lesson is for Grades 4-5 math. We are surrounded everyday by circuits that utilize "in parallel" and "in series" circuitry. Complicated circuits designed by engineers are made of many simpler parallel and series circuits. In this hands-on activity, students build parallel circuits, exploring how they function and their unique features.

CK-12's Grade 5 Elementary Math is a series of videos and interactive videos designed to teach basic math concepts to 5th graders. Concepts covered include Multiplication and Division, Place Value, Multiple Operations and Grouping, Decimals, Time, Fractions, Money, Measurement, and Geometry.

Students will use a drawing in order to show to divide a whole into fractions.

This video shows two different student-generated strategies for solving fair share problems leading to a fraction less than 1. This standard relates to Common Core standard 5.NF.3, and North Carolina standard NC.5.NF.3.

The end of this video helps teachers see how standard NF.3 can be introduced prior to NF.1 (addition/subraction of fractions with unlike denominators).

Students will activate their prior knowledge of Haiti from Feed the Hunger PBL and answer a few questions about Haiti statistics and value of money. They will also relate fractions to the statistics and money amounts. This lesson was developed by Erin Plummer as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

In this lesson, students will learning about monetary amounts (a quarter) and what a quarter could buy you here in the United States as well as in Haiti. Students will also be exploring fractions by comparing the same monetary amount to a fraction of a dollar and also write out a dollar amount using fractions in simpliest form. This lesson was developed by Marissa Piersanti as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

The purpose of this task is to help students see the connection between aÖb and ab in a particular concrete example. The relationship between the division problem 3Ö8 and the fraction 3/8 is actually very subtle.

This workbook was created through the efforts of three instructors at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona. Any individual may download and utilize a digital copy of this workbook for free.

Students will explore the concept of multiplication of fractions as a means to find a fractional portion of a fraction (of a whole). They will then apply their understanding of multiplication of fractions to solve a problem in the context of a lemonade business. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project.
