Students will apply fourth grade concepts of equivalent fractions, decimals, and symmetry to create artwork. Once all students have created their masterpieces, they will have a conversation to compare and contrast the various pieces.  Through teacher questioning, this conversation will lead to a deeper understanding of equivalent fractions and decimal fractions.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Students will look up the website "Around the World in 80 Hats" (https://visual.ly/community/infographic/travel/around-world-80-hats) on the internet, spending time looking at the designs and fabrics of the varied hats. Students talk with one another, naming their favorite hats, and telling why they chose the hat. Students will draw two hats, a familiar hat and a creative hat. This lesson was developed by Sarah Owen-Palethore as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

The NC Kids' Exploration Journals are a fun educational tool to help youth explore their communities and natural surroundings! Each journal contains: 18 multidisciplinary activities with guided prompts, 6 lined journal pages for recording observations and reflections, and 4 blank pages for individual creativity.

The digital versions of the journal are designed to be printed out for students either as individual activities or in its entirety so that they can explore their school yard, local park, or own backyard. Though designed for 1st - 5th-graders, older audiences may enjoy them too! They are also available in both English and Spanish languages.

This lesson features a glue relief self portrait and personal portrait image covered with aluminum foil on the outside cover. On the inside are special messages about the "artist" and his or her special image.

Students will understand the difference between a sculpture and a drawing or painting, understand the meaning of the word silhouette and will create a simple silhouette of any animal or object they choose and use that drawing to create a sculpture piece which is mounted to a wooden base.

This free website provides more than 600 adaptable lesson plans written by teachers in collaboration with the Denver Art Museum for more than 130 objects from the museums world-class art collection. Lesson plans and resources focus on inspiring students to think and problem-solve creatively. Organized in an easy way so that teachers can pick the topic they would like to explore or enhance, then use works of art to teach that subject.

High resolution images are included. Museum visits are not necessary to implement lesson plans. Toony Tool is a free web tool that works on any device with a web browser. It allows students to be creative as they create their own cartoon/realistic scenes, comic scenes, posters or memes. It does not require a login. Pictures can be uploaded as well. Students can download or share their creations.
