Moore County Schools - K-5 Design Thinking
Students will construct a zoo exhibit based on one from the book using the materials provided, complete with zoo animal.You must use ONLY the supplies provided. The zoo exhibit must be constructed on a flat surface and it must be as accurate as possible based on one from the book.
As students are reviewing odd and even numbers, students first sketch out a bug that has odd or even features. Students then use Tinkercad to turn their sketch into a 3D design to be printed.
Students can work individually or in groups of 3 or 4 to create a solar oven out of a pizza box. Students are trying to figure out the best way to make a solar oven in order to melt the chocolate and marshmallow in the S’more. Students will be given a group of objects and tell them the basis of how to create a solar oven. The oven will need to be placed in direct sunlight for most of the day. This experiment works best on a very hot, sunny day.
Design and build a sleigh using a WeDo kit, K’nex or similar, that will pull a specific measured weight.
As students study electricity and circuits, they can build their Operation games. Made from a few household materials, a makey-makey kit and the Scratch website, students can create and play their Operation game.
Students will construct a tower as high as possible using spaghetti, lasagna noodles and marshmallows. Limited supplies of materials are available. Pieces of spaghetti can be broken into desired lengths.
Students will create a fictitious city that has experienced a natural disaster. Once their city is completed, students will create a vehicle to transport supplies to the people who need help.
After learning about Gail Halvorsen, the World War II pilot who created tiny parachutes from handkerchiefs and string to deliver chocolates and other candy to the children of Berlin, students will engineer parachutes to deliver their own packages using Parrot Mambo Drones.
Students use pipe cleaners and uv sensitive beads to create an animal and then design a structure that will protect the animal and keep it from changing colors in the sun.
Students will be given a Makey Makey kit, a Chromebook with the Scratch website and a choice of materials to create a circuit that will allow the students to play an in instrument.
As students study the human body, they can include the different body systems as they build their Operation games. Made from a few household materials, a makey-makey kit and the Scratch website, students can create and play their Operation game.
You will investigate various materials to determine their insulation value. From this investigation, you will design and build a doghouse that will keep your dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Each team has a budget of $45 to spend to modify a cup into the ultimate predator. After predators are constructed, students battle to pop each others’ balloons. Whichever predator is able to survive is the apex predator.
Students create a Google doodle with block code to represent one of two options: 1. Their identity2. Contribution to society 10 years from now
After reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas, students will work together to build a sleigh for the Grinch so he can take the presents and decorations from the Whos.
After reading Ricky the Rock That Couldn’t Roll, students will engineer a slope/hill and see if they can get a non-spherical rock to roll the length of it. Students will be given 4 (fake) dollars to buy materials according to their plan.
Students will create an obstacle course for the Dash robot to demonstrate the following movements and position words: straight, in front of, behind, zigzag, between, on top of, round and round , under, above, back and forth, below, beside, fast and slow.
After reading various versions of The Three Little Pigs, students will plan and design houses that could protect the little pigs from the Big Bad Wolf (a hair dryer).
Students build a parachute that can travel quickly and safely to the ground.
After reading Little Red Riding Hood, students will engineer a basket that will hold 50 unifix cubes while walking 100 steps without breaking.
