This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 2nd Grade Science in Evolution & Genetics.

This resource accompanies our Rethink 2nd Grade Science Unit #5. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.

 Students will listen to a close reading of The 3 Little Pigs over the course of 3 days.  (Many versions are accessible via NC Kids Digital Library.  Teacher discretion as to the story version.  Personal copy or online versions can be used.) After each read aloud, students will have the opportunity to engage in The Engineering Design Process to create a new dwelling using materials of varying physical properties.  Students will write to tell about their new dwelling design using sentence frames and an anchor chart for support.  Finally, students will present their new dwellings and read their informational writing to reflect their knowledge of physical properties.  Student informational writing should reflect physical properties such as size, color, shape, texture, weight and flexibility per the NC Kindergarten Science Standards.

This is an end of the year culminating project . Students will work on their own or in pairs to create a house that will help their family to survive the climate of a randomly chosen location. Students will use their knowledge or ecosystems, heating and cooling, and weather prediction and tracking to determine the proper supplies that will be needed to build a house for survival. The project will include weather research, house build planning, creating a mock-up, and presentation to the class. The project will conclude with a video detailing what they would change after collaboration with the class.

This article provides an overview of icebergs' formation and characteristics and the hazards associated with icebergs.

This activity, which centers on Antarctica, challenges students to research and create the answers and questions for a game of classroom Jeopardy. The printable six-page handout includes a series of inquiry-based questions to get students thinking about Antarctica and guidelines for conducting additional research, illustrated activity directions and a worksheet that helps students craft their Jeopardy-style answers and questions.

Students will use different terms of measurements to measure dimensions of their apples. Students will use 5 senses to describe their apples.

This issue of the free online magazine, Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears, explores the amazing birds that live in or migrate to the polar regions. The issue was co-produced with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In addition to content knowledge articles and lesson plans, the issue includes information about bird-themed citizen science programs from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

This article assembles free resources from the Arctic and Antarctic Birds issue of the Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears cyberzine into a unit outline based on the 5E learning cycle framework. Outlines are provided for Grades K-2 and 3-5.
