The Cafeteria Manager at your school has decided to offer a Salad Bar. The Salad Bar will be open for all students and staff at the school. You love all sorts of yummy things on your salad. You get a bowl that holds 568 pieces in it. You want to put as much as you can on your salad without going over the 568 pieces. However, the toppings come in sets and you have to use the whole set. The Cafeteria Manage is allowing you to try out the Salad Bar before it is open to all students. History Comes Alive: Developing Fluency and Comprehension Using Social Studies

This cross-curricular lesson combines Social Studies and Language Arts to demonstrate how the study of an historical topic can be developed to make learning nonfiction more exciting, and also improve fluency and comprehension. This project about Benjamin Franklin includes a series of lessons in which the students: 1) read for information from multiple texts, 2) write a script for a Readers Theater play, 3) read for expression and fluency by using their script, 4) enhance their reading with visual arts, and 5) demonstrate dramatic interpretation through role-play. This approach engages students throughout in active participation and collaboration. Included are many supporting resources, such as a read-aloud rubric, an audition sheet, and ideas for student assessment and reflection.

After studying the poem, students are given a copy of the poem to illustrate and share their understanding. Designed to help prevent summer reading loss, this set of printable books is for Grade 2 students getting ready to move into Grade 3. There are seven books, one for each week of summer, and each book has three chapters. These informational texts include information about summer activities and themes. Each book starts with guidelines on how to use the book. There are also comprehension questions at the end of each book, and each book has a place where students can keep records of their reading of chapters within books. If students have access to computers (e.g., the library), they can access a recording of each book that allows them to monitor and check their reading.
