North Carolina experienced major flooding in 2018 due to Hurricane Florence. As a result there has been a huge increase in the amount and size of mosquitoes in our state. Mosquitoes are known for carrying diseases like Zika, Malaria, and West Nile. We must do something to help our community. Bats can be an answer to this problem. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito sized insects every hour and each bat can usually eat up to 6,000 to 8,000 insects per night. To help alleviate a massive amount of mosquitoes in our community we will build bat boxes and share them with our community.
Students will write a letter to show either the beginning or ending sound of each picture. This resource also contains a game in which they say two words that start with a, then two words that start b, then c, and so on and so on until they reach the letter z.
In this form of Bingo, instead of using chips to mark off numbers on a playing card students use recognizable signs, logos, and labels as part of a game that promotes literacy learning. By playing this form of Bingo, emerging readers in kindergarten and first grade are encouraged to practice their reading skills using a variety of environmental print materials.
Students engage in games and chants to recognize the same sounds in different words. Students match objects with the same beginning or ending sound, identify whether a given sound occurs at the beginning or ending of a word, and connect phonemes with graphemes.
Students will be watching a video to sing along and practice CVC short vowel sound words.Students will then look at a picture and tap out the sounds. After tapping out the sounds they hear, they will move the letters to match the sounds they hear for each picture.
Students will have to listen carefully so they can match words that have the same middle vowel sound, like "stove" and "rose."
As a way to support teachers with English Language Arts (ELA) instruction during the pandemic, the NCDPI ELA team created choice boards featuring standards-aligned ELA activities.The intended purpose of these choice boards is to provide a way for students to continue standards-based learning while schools are closed. Each activity can be adapted and modified to be completed with or without the use of digital tools. Many activities can also be repeated with different texts. These standards-based activities are meant to be a low-stress approach to reinforcing and enriching the skills learned during the 2019-2020 school year. The choice boards are to be used flexibly by teachers, parents, and students in order to meet the unique needs of each learner.Exploration activities are provided for a more self-directed or guided approach to independent learning for students. These activities and sites should be used as a way to explore concepts, topics, skills, and social and emotional competencies that interest the learner.

In this lesson, students explore books and magazines for words that have the "ig" rime, in addition to brainstorming their own words. Furthermore, assessment is included as students incorporate learned words in context and isolation.
This lesson provides a series of literacy activities based on the familiar words and characters of nursery rhymes that can be used regularly to help children grow as readers and writers. Activities include reciting nursery rhymes to gain oral fluency, then adding a written chart so students can follow along with the written words as they say the rhymes. Students can also play and explore at nursery rhyme Websites.
These activities provide examples of one-on-one student assessments that can be done informally in the classroom. Students will focus on the concepts of print as well as phonics.
