This 8th grade Math parent guide explains the content in straightforward terms so they can support their children’s learning at home and will encourage caretaker engagement with lessons.

In this lesson, students will solve problems involving perfect squares and square roots of small perfect squares.

In CK-12 Middle School Math Concepts Grade 8, the learning content is divided into concepts. Each concept is complete and whole providing focused learning on an indicated objective. Theme-based concepts provide students with experiences that integrate the content of each concept. Students are given opportunities to practice the skills of each concept through real-world situations, examples, guided practice and explore more practice. In this activity, students develop an understanding of the relationship between a number and its square root. They will first recognize perfect squares and order them from least to greatest with other numbers. Then students will estimate the square root of a number using perfect squares. Requires TI technology.

For this lesson, students find the positive solutions for equations of the form x2 = p and x3 = p.

This lesson unit is intended to help you assess how well students working with square numbers are able to: choose an appropriate, systematic way to collect and organize data, examining the data for patterns; describe and explain findings clearly and effectively; generalize using numerical, geometrical, graphical and/or algebraic structure; and explain why certain results are possible/impossible, moving towards a proof.

Students learn how engineers navigate satellites in orbit around the Earth and on their way to other planets in the solar system. In accompanying activities, they explore how ground-based tracking and onboard measurements are performed. Also provided is an overview of orbits and spacecraft trajectories from Earth to other planets, and how spacecraft are tracked from the ground using the Deep Space Network (DSN). DSN measurements are the primary means for navigating unmanned vehicles in space. Onboard spacecraft instruments might include optical sensors and an inertial measurement unit (IMU).

Students practice finding missing values given exponential equations and expressions in this interactive game.

For this lesson, students know that the positive square root and cube root exists for all positive numbers and is unique. Students solve simple equations that require them to find the square or cube root of a number.

In this activity, students will make a variety of squares using square tiles and the Table feature of the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition™ to discover patterns and make predictions off those patterns; Requires TI technology.

This lesson covers simple square root and cube root equations such as x2 = 10 and x3 = ?8. Students will: solve simple square root equations, listing both solutions where appropriate; solve simple cube root equations; identify equations of both types with whole number solutions, irrational solutions, and no real solutions.

In this unit, students demonstrate finding square roots and cube roots of perfect squares and perfect cubes.
