As students study Harriet Tubman and her contribution to the Underground Railroad, students will create a map that is labeled with coordinates and contains a number of stops at safehouses. Students will then create a program for Dash to start from a specific location and travel along the Underground Railroad.

Thomas Edison is a famous inventor. His work with the telegraph and telephone led him to invent the phonograph, which recorded sound as indentations on a sheet of paraffin-coated paper. Students can listen to his first recordings at the NPS (National Park Services) archives. Students will learn how to create their own recordings at the Online Voice Recorder.

After the whole class science unit of study on sound, which includes biographical information about Helen Keller, the AIG students will select an additional famous person with a disability to research. They will engage in research and write a short biography of their selected notable person to be compiled in a class e-book. This resource tells the story of Daniel Boone's trek through forests in the Appalachian Mountains. He is known for building a road to the state of Kentucky. Illustrations are provided of Daniel Boone, the mountains, and his cabin.

AIG students will research Leonardo da Vinci's futuristic inventions, and then work collaboratively to design original inventions for the future. They will write descriptive paragraphs about their invention and publish the finished product using a digital program. Objectives for Learners: Students will: 1. Study the early life and innovations of Benjamin Franklin using a variety of media (autobiography, biographies, Internet web sites, condensed history or display boards, dramatic presentation); 2. Prepare written answers to selected Introductory Questions based upon their individual or shared research.

Students will learn about organizations, campaigns and leaders who are making an effort to help children world-wide go to school and get educated. Such leaders include Michelle Obama with her program and Oprah Winfrey. The students will watch a video about an organization called "Transforming Education for Girls Project." Students will take a leadership role and begin to plan actions to improve conditions in the country of Guatemala by starting a fundraiser at the school level. The funds collected will be used to fund educational teaching materials and student learning resources. The fundraiser is supported by Teachers 2 Teachers Global, who will use the money collected to fund the classroom in which the teacher is connected with and is planning future interactive Skype lessons. The students will be reading a biography about Ruby Bridges called, Ruby Bridges Goes to School, My True Story (Bridges, 2009). She is an American activist who became a symbol of the Civil Rights movement. At age six, she became amongst the youngest of a group of African American students to integrate schools in the south. She was the first black child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana in 1960. The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn about the struggles that African-American children faced in trying to get an equal education, here in the United States around the 1960's. The lesson addresses how the community is impacted by innovators like George Washington Carver. Students examine the life of George Washington Carver and other innovators including those in the local community to learn about and use problem-solving skills and imagine themselves as problem-solvers and innovators.

The lesson looks more closely at how scientific and technological innovations have changed the way people meet their needs in communities. Robert Fulton is used as an example of an innovator in this lesson that focuses on changes in transportation.
