This parent guide supports parents in helping their child at home with the 7th grade Science content.
This resource accompanies our Rethink 7th Grade Science course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
CK-12's Life Science delivers a full course of study in the life sciences for the middle school student, relating an understanding of the history, disciplines, tools, and modern techniques of science to the exploration of cell biology, genetics, evolution, prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, the animal kingdom, the human body, and ecology. This digital textbook was reviewed for its alignment with California content standards.
This short video lesson describes the human genome by comparing DNA to a detailed manual for building a person out of cells -- with 46 chapters (chromosomes) and hundreds of thousands of pages covering every part of you. Assessment questions and links to additional resources are included.
The Genetics Student Edition book is one of ten volumes making up the Human Biology curriculum, an interdisciplinary and inquiry-based approach to the study of life science.
Within the life science strand of 7th grade science, students focus on the patterns of inheritance and the potential variation among offspring. In this task, students will act as genetic counselors for Nora, an individual who has learned of a genetic disorder that affects her family after attending a reunion. Students will create a pedigree for the Jamison family based on provided information and use it to explain and advise Nora. The real-world aspects of this lesson allow students to build meaningful connections and promote the development of 21st Century Skills. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
CK-12 Life Science Honors For Middle School covers seven units: Understanding Living Things; Cells: The Building Blocks of Life; Genetics and Evolution; Prokaryotes, Protists, Fungi, and Plants; The Animal Kingdom; The Human Body; and Ecology.
Students will breed fruit flies through several generations and record their data using mathematical models in order to demonstrate the inheritance of trait variations.

In this task, students will assume the role of support group members who must discuss and individually decide on the issue of whether or not to be tested for a genetic trait or disorder. Students will read nonfiction passages regarding this issue to prepare for the support group meeting that will take the form of a Socratic Seminar. Passages should have been selected by the teacher to include examples of genetic disorders with effects that can be mitigated through early detection and appropriate diet or lifestyle choices. Students will then individually state their decisions and support them through written explanations that reference the discussion and provided passages. 7th Grade Integrated Science textbook for the 2019-2020 school year. This textbook was developed to align to the Utah Science Core Curriculum. (Updated: May 29, 2019)
Within the life science strand of 7th grade science, students focus on the mechanisms of cellular reproduction, patterns of inheritance, and external factors to potential variation among offspring. In this task, students will work together to create a population of sexually-reproducing Furlings, analyze the generational genotypes and phenotypes, and discover the effects of environmental change on variance within the population. The modeling of this real-world phenomenon and the interdisciplinary aspects of this lesson allow students to build meaningful connections and promote the development of 21st Century Skills.
