This resource accompanies our Rethink 7th Grade Science course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
The AQ-IQ Contest for Seventh Grade Students has students creating a project on an air quality problem, looking for solutions to the problem, and creating a poster, on-line interactive, artist, or video project to educate others about the issue. Students will submit the projects and bibliographies using an on-line tool. The pest projects will be invited to a recognition ceremony and receive a prize package. CK-12's Life Science delivers a full course of study in the life sciences for the middle school student, relating an understanding of the history, disciplines, tools, and modern techniques of science to the exploration of cell biology, genetics, evolution, prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, the animal kingdom, the human body, and ecology. This digital textbook was reviewed for its alignment with California content standards.
Instructions are provided for making a solar oven, followed by directions for using the oven to make s'mores. A side column discusses the practicality of using solar ovens in places like western Africa. The Climate Kids website is a NASA education resource featuring articles, videos, images and games focused on the science of climate change.
This 1-2 hour activity was developed by Science Friday educator collaborative for middle school science. Students will "reverse-engineer a solar circuit to build a simple, inexpensive, and lightweight device that is powered by the sun’s light...in order to...integrate their circuit into a moveable origami structure so that the movement of the origami serves as the switch to the circuit."
Simple dollar store solar stake lights can be used for the disassembly which can be demonstrated by the teacher or completed in small groups. By reverse engineering the solar light, students explore the components and how they work together. The second activity has them sketching and explaining what they discovered.
Resources are included that explain solar cells and circuits more in depth (including a text webpage from American Chemical Society, a video from SciToons on YouTube, and an online circuit simulation from PhET, among other choices for your class' needs).

Within the physical science strand of 7th grade science, students focus on understanding forms of energy, energy transfer, and transformation and conservation in mechanical systems. In this task, students investigate “mystery boxes” and use a student-constructed circuit tester to determine the location of closed circuits. Students will then create their own “mystery boxes” including both series and parallel circuits. Finally, students will then create study guides for other content areas using their understanding of closed circuits. The application and interdisciplinary nature of this lesson allows students to creatively build meaningful connections while promoting 21st Century Skills. With this resource, students will learn the many different inventions of Franklin and other inventors in the 1700's. His famous work was in electricity, one of the 7 main types of technology. Franklin was known for coming up with two charges which he called positive and negative. He also discovered that lightning and electricity are the same.
Learners will design a combined machine to eliminate one chore they may dislike. Once learners work through the engineering design process, they will share their prototype locally.

Within the physical science strand of 7th grade science, students focus on forms of energy, energy transfer, and transformation and conservation in mechanical systems—in other words, potential and kinetic energy, work, and mechanical advantage and efficiency in simple machines. In this task, students working in groups design a simple machine or simple machine system that would be able to lift and relocate a 13 kg cinder block after reading an excerpt from Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert O'Brien, a novel about genetically engineered rats who assist a mouse by moving her home out of danger in a farmer’s field. The interdisciplinary and inquiry based nature of this activity allows students to build meaningful connections while promoting creativity and 21st Century Skills.
