In this video, students learn that all matter can exist in three forms: solid, liquid or gas. They compare the basic properties. Matter can change states through heating or cooling, and it is sure to change when it reaches its boiling point or freezing point.
The Solids. Liquids, and Gases unit is designed to provide students with information and experiences related to the three states of matter and addresses how matter can change from one state to another. In the introductory activity, students make observations about a variety of objects and substances and classify them as solid, liquid, or gas.
Students will create a representation for the molecules in a solid, liquid, and a gas. They will then animate their representations to mimic the movement of the molecules inside of each type of matter.
Students explore a range of common household substances to determine if they have the properties of a solid, a liquid, or both.
In this activity, students use art supplies to create an original drawing showing water in its three states of matter.
This resource can be used as a warm-up, pre-test, or post assessment on identifying the three states of matter.
