This unit combines nonfiction reading, biographies, Henry Ford, and Michigan history into one unit. It covers many informational reading standards and Michigan social studies standards all together.

This unit engages students in a variety of different reading standards through face to face and online components. In this unit, students will practice many skills to aid them in reading and understanding nonfiction texts.

This is a multi-day culminating activity based on unit 2 of the 4th grade Wonders curriculum. Students will work in groups to research a chosen animal off of a given list. After researching the animal, they will create a visual using four nonfiction text features to describe the animal. Students will connect a Makey Makey to their presentation and record audio describing each section. After projects are complete, students will participate in a gallery walk. A rubric accompanies this activity so teachers have guidelines on how to assess student work.

Help Noah learn how to identify examples of cause and effect in informational text in this ocean-themed, interactive tutorial. You will also learn how to match events and ideas in informational text that have a cause and effect relationship. 

This is an example of a personalized learning path using the Nearpod system. Students complete a pre-assessment to discover the skills they should continue to practice as well as an extension activity for student who already show mastery.

In this lesson students explore expository texts about natural disasters that focus on cause-and-effect relationships. As a class students record their understandings in a graphic organizer. Students then work in small groups and write paragraphs outlining the cause-and-effect relationships they have found.

This lesson focuses on identifying and analyzing the compare and contrast text structure within expository texts. First, students are introduced to the terms compare and contrast and asked to find similarities and differences between two common items. Next, students work in small groups to identify texts that are comparing and contrasting information.

Students will read an informational text about "Artful Architecture," engage in a discussion about the book, and create their own pyramid structure.

Students read each sentence and write the cause on the first line and the effect on the second line. An answer key is included.

Students will read a text, underline the instructions, and on a separate sheet of paper draw a flow chart that shows the instructions in the correct order.

Students will research on the computer. This scientific article provides anatomical features and the adaptive advantages of those features of owls and giraffes. The text is written for native speakers 9 years and up.

Students will work individually, or in partners, to brainstorm products or professions that they may be interested in pursuing. They will create a visual (Google Slide or poster) as well as a fact card that outlines the steps of creating/pursuing the chosen product or profession. Then, students will create a Flipgrid that would persuade investors to invest in their product or company. A rubric accompanies this activity so teachers have guidelines on how to assess student work.
