The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) videos are designed to support states, schools, and teachers in the implementation of selected math standards. Each video is an audiovisual resource that focuses on one or more specific standards through examples and illustrations geared to enhancing understanding. The intent of each content-focused video is to clarify the meaning of the individual standard rather than to be a guide on how to teach each standard, although the examples can be adapted for instructional use.

Students examine how different balls react when colliding with different surfaces, giving plenty of opportunity for them to see the difference between elastic and inelastic collisions, learn how to calculate momentum, and understand the principle of conservation of momentum.

In this two-part activity, students design and build Rube Goldberg machines. This open-ended challenge employs the engineering design process and may have a pre-determined purpose, such as rolling a marble into a cup from a distance, or let students decide the purposes.

The purpose of this lesson is to teach the students about how a spacecraft gets from the surface of the Earth to Mars. The lesson first investigates rockets and how they are able to get us into space. Finally, the nature of an orbit is discussed as well as how orbits enable us to get from planet to planet specifically from Earth to Mars.

Students will use an Integer Card Game that creates a conceptual understanding of integer operations and serves as a mental model students can rely on during the module. They will build on their understanding of rational numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide signed numbers.
In this lesson, students use algebra to solve equations (of the form …
In this lesson, students use algebra to solve equations (of the form px + q = r and p( x + q ) = r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers); using techniques of making zero (adding the additive inverse) and making one (multiplying by the multiplicative inverse) to solve for the variable.
Students identify and compare the sequence of operations used to find the solution to an equation algebraically, with the sequence of operations used to solve the equation with tape diagrams. They recognize the steps as being the same.
Students solve equations for the value of the variable using inverse operations; by making zero (adding the additive inverse) and making one (multiplying by the multiplicative inverse).

Students are presented with a guide to rain garden construction in an activity that culminates the unit and pulls together what they have learned and prepared in materials during the three previous associated activities. They learn about the four vertical zones that make up a typical rain garden with the purpose to cultivate natural infiltration of stormwater. Student groups create personal rain gardens planted with native species that can be installed on the school campus, within the surrounding community, or at students' homes to provide a green infrastructure and low-impact development technology solution for areas with poor drainage that often flood during storm events.

In this math video lesson on fundaments of Algebra, students will make connections between ideas about equations, inequalities, and expressions, they will use mathematical vocabulary to describe, discuss, and work with the symbol strings and properties of algebraic equations. This resource supports English language development for English language learners.

Using the LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT kit, students construct experiments to measure the time it takes a free falling body to travel a specified distance. Students use the touch sensor, rotational sensor, and the NXT brick to measure the time of flight for the falling object at different release heights. After the object is released from its holder and travels a specified distance, a touch sensor is triggered and time of object's descent from release to impact at touch sensor is recorded and displayed on the screen of the NXT. Students calculate the average velocity of the falling object from each point of release, and construct a graph of average velocity versus time. They also create a best fit line for the graph using spreadsheet software. Students use the slope of the best fit line to determine their experimental g value and compare this to the standard value of g.
