This resource accompanies our Rethink 1st Grade Social Studies Civics & Government unit. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 1st Grade Social Studies in Civics & Government.

In this unit, students will build upon the concept that people are not free to do whatever they want, and that there are reasons for rules at home, in school, and in their community. Students need a strong foundation in Civics and Government to help them better understand their own community and their own lives. Building upon the concept that people are not free to do whatever they want. Concepts of power and authority are introduced as students identify examples of people using power with and without authority in the school setting.
In this lesson students learn about the need for rules. They identify rules, classify rules, and vote on rules for their classroom. They also learn about the positive and negative consequences associated with following or not following rules and about and how these consequences affect individuals, as well as the classroom community.
Students will learn about the different items which are used by firefighters and the role they play in the community.
In this lesson, students will be able to clearly identify and understand the importance of authority figures and articulate their role in our lives.
In this lesson, students learn about the people in the school community, their jobs and job descriptions, and identify locations of those jobs within the school. Students also learn how these jobs contribute to meeting the needs of the school community.
In this lesson, students are introduced to authority figures in the community who make and enforce rules. They come to understand that, just like home, the community has rules that provide order, security, and safety.
In this lesson, the students will use the problem-solving process to address common problems that arise in a kindergarten classroom and/or on the playground. The teacher will pose the problems and lead the students through the problem-solving process.
The lesson will focus on rules for online safety. First, we will discuss rules for being safe in our classroom community and the reason for those rules. We then will discuss rules that they know for online safety and make a list on chart paper. Then the students will view a video from Common Sense Education, My Online Neighborhood. They will learn 3 main rules for being safe online: Ask an adult to go online, only talk to people you know and use websites that are just right for you. I will add to the chart paper . The students will work in groups to create posters focusing on one rule. They will share with the class and discuss. Lastly, the students will discuss with a partner on rule that they feel is the most important to them. They will then draw a picture and write at least one rule on the writing paper. For students who are above grade level they can write more than one. For students who are below grade level, they can draw a picture and then have their idea scribed by the teacher.
In this lesson, students will become familiar with recognizing the different occupations, and their roles, within the community.
Students will use the problem-solving process to address common problems that arise in a kindergarten classroom and/or on the playground. The teacher will pose the problems and lead the students through the problem-solving process.
In this lesson, students investigate who works in their community and create signs for community helpers they would like to be. Students will then examine the roles chosen by their classmates and decide if there are jobs missing in their "town." Students will then have the opportunity to change their role to improve the town.
