An excel document has been added to assist in data collection, record keeping, and graph generation.Students can work individually or in groups of 3 or 4 to create a solar oven out of a pizza box. Students will be given a group of objects and tell them the basis of how to create a solar oven. The oven will need to be placed in direct sunlight for most of the day. In this lesson, students will compare temperatures of soil and water in and out of the sun, and recognize that the sun heats the land and water.

In this lesson, students will predict, measure and record temperatures using assorted colored paper pockets to determine if color plays a role with heat absorption. Student data will provide evidence that shows the sun is a source of heat and light for the Earth. Extension activities that include the arts, community and probing questions are included.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to thermometers and will practice taking temperature readings in different locations indoors and outside.

In this water cycle activity, students investigate the evaporation process by participating in an outdoor evaporation experiment held on the school grounds. Students will determine where evaporation takes place the fastest and how nature and humans can affect the process. Observations will be done and data is recorded in each student's science notebook so that the process can be discussed and analyzed.

In this lesson, students make observations that things in direct sunlight are warmer than things that are not in as much sunlight. Also, they may notice that there may be more heat near asphalt, brick, or cement because heat can be stored and radiated from these, also.

This is lesson one of the unit Weather Trackers (http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/unitplan/11468.htm). Students learn by observation and hands-on activities the act of water changing state from a solid to a liquid to a gas.

In this lesson, students will understand the role of the sun as a source of heat on Earth as they participate in two activities: Solar Panning and Greenhouse Model. Students will discover the effects of the sun's heat energy by measuring the temperature of pans of water left in a sunny place over a long time period, and they will create mini greenhouses using 2 liter bottles of soil to measure how the earth's temperature rises as a result of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The strength of this lesson can be found in the varied family, extension, differentiation and inquiry-based activities that are included.

Students will work in groups to build simple solar stills filled with salt water and observe what happens when the stills are placed in the sun. The students then taste the water they have collected and discuss what has happened in their stills.

This is the second lesson in the unit Weather Trackers (http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/unitplan/11468.htm). Students have the opportunity to work in groups to draw the rain cycle and make their own "movie" using a large cardboard milk carton and heavy white paper. Students are assessed on their ability to identify the pattern of the rain cycle and to sequence the events in order. Emphasis is placed on the Sun being the source of heat that drives the cycle.
