This is an end of the year culminating project . Students will work on their own or in pairs to create a house that will help their family to survive the climate of a randomly chosen location. Students will use their knowledge or ecosystems, heating and cooling, and weather prediction and tracking to determine the proper supplies that will be needed to build a house for survival. The project will include weather research, house build planning, creating a mock-up, and presentation to the class. The project will conclude with a video detailing what they would change after collaboration with the class.

This resource accompanies our Rethink 5th Grade Science course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.

In this lesson, students investigate the chemical and physical changes that occur in matter by participating in activities involving dry ice and root beer. Students will first explore release of carbon dioxide from carbonated beverages. Students will then view several teacher-led experiments with dry ice to demonstrate the sublimation process, including the production of root beer. In the final part of the lesson, students will create their own root beer, using multiple recipes, and compare and contrast their products. Associated resources include student worksheets, root beer recipes, and supplemental reading texts.

Assesses students' abilities to make and record measurements of temperature and probes their understanding of the concept of insulation. Hot water is poured into three containers (metal, ceramic, and plastic) and temperature is taken and recorded over a 10-minute interval to investigate the effect of different container materials on heat transfer and insulating capacity.

Students are provided with the vocabulary, concepts, and context to understand the impact of climate change on the hydrological cycle. Students make observations throughout a series of demonstrations and activities regarding how temperature affects the phases of water and connect these ideas to the physical environment.

In this lesson students will investigate heat transfer and how different materials transfer heat at different rates. Students will make observations and have discussion after several demonstrations.
In this hands-on lesson, students explore the effect of heating and cooling …
In this hands-on lesson, students explore the effect of heating and cooling on the dispersal of food coloring in water. Students will observe how heat speeds up changes in materials. Real life connections are used, and lesson extensions such as probing questions, teacher and student activity sheets, assessment and a web link is included.

In this STEM lesson, teams of students explore the relationship of heat to temperature. Participating in hands on experiments, they will observe and investigate convection currents and heat transfer. Finally, they are challenged to use their learning in this unit to create a melt proof ice cream container. Students will design and build the container, then track temperature changes over 4 hours to determine if their design works.

In this lesson, students will sprinkle coarse salt on a piece of ice and make observations as it melts. They will also make homemade ice cream. They will then use their observations to discuss heat energy and chemical reactions.

Students design investigations to test various materials for their ability to prevent heat transfer from the classroom to ice cubes, causing melting to occur. Students work individually over three class periods to plan, carry out, collect data and share results on their investigation. A student task card, rubric, and examples of student work are included with this activity.

In this lesson, students test a variety of insulators and relate their knowledge to energy conservation. With teacher guidance, students design their own investigation. After all experiments are completed, the class looks across the data and draws evidence-based conclusions.

Assess students' understanding of scientific inquiry including the following skills: observation, background research, scientific procedures (including investigation design, measurement techniques, and error analysis), data collection, data display, scientific questions, formulating an hypothesis. Students will design and carry out an investigation to test which material is the best insulator; they will predict which way heat energy will flow in a system and analyze the flow of energy in a system from one point to another and from one form to another.

Students test paper cups, styrofoam cups, and metal cans to determine which type of container would be best to use to keep drinks cool on a hot day. Each type is filled with ice water and temperature is recorded at specific time intervals.

This is the educator's guide for a set of activities that teach students about humans' endeavors to return to the moon. The emphasis is for students to understand that engineers must "imagine and plan" before they begin to build and experiment. Each activity features objectives, a list of materials, educator information, procedures, and student worksheets. Students should work in teams to complete the activities. Note: Activities do not align to all objectives that are listed; specific activities align to specific objectives.
