The NC Office of Early Learning strongly encourages incorporating play into the daily routine of each classroom.
Children grow and learn in all developmental domains through their engagement in centers; cognitive, physical, social, and emotional. Authentic learning and meaningful connections are made when a teacher intentionally weaves standards and supports development throughout children’s play. PlaytoLearn Center Posters provide information about common areas of development supported during play centers along with prompts connected to kindergarten standards and NC ELI dimensions.

PlaytoLearn Planning Guides (also shared on #GoOpenNC) provide information on why each center is important to children's development, tips for setting up centers, sugessted materials, actions of an intentional teacher, and common connections children make to content. Although these resources are specifically written for kindergarten, teaching and learning strategies can be applied to many grade levels.

Reinforcing numeracy through a Sorting Network (Ages 5-7)
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Use the Sorting Network template to draw a 6 person Sorting Network on a paved surface outside using chalk (other alternatives include using masking/painters tape on a carpet or wooden floor, tape on a tarpaulin, or line marking paint on grass). Note that the Sorting Network needn't use different colours or line thicknesses, but if suitable chalk or tape is available, this can help students remember which way to go. It should be large enough that two students can comfortably stand in the rectangles; the more spread out it is, the more effective the exercise is. In a very confined situation, it could be done on a desk top using game counters instead of students moving around, but this is much less engaging.

This resource is part of Tools4NCTeachers.

This packet contains exit tickets for Kindergarten Cluster 2, numbers 0-20.

Exit tickets are written responses to questions posed at the end of a lesson. They are brief assessments which allow the teacher to determine student understanding of the concepts and skills taught that day.

At the Kindergarten level, a blank copy of the exit ticket should be displayed on the board and read aloud to students. As teacher reads, students work independently on their own copy of the exit ticket.
