This is a multi-day culminating activity based on Wonders Unit 4 weeks 3-4.  Students will use the Wonders materials provided in the Reading/Writing companion, as well as their Literature Anthology to identify and describe the moon phases. Partners will get a moon phase card.  They will work together to program the robot to reach the appropriate moon phase to match the card on the map.  For an optional extension activity, students can create an audio recording to describe the moon phase that they were assigned.  Encourage students to utilize text for support of identification and description of moon phases.

Students will work or in learning teams to design and build a cardboard ship bow using Makedo tools to transform their desk or a copy paper box into a pirate ship for the classroom museum. Students will research historic North Carolina pirates including Blackbeard using multiple print and digital texts to prepare a written entry for their exhibit.Family and other classes will be invited to view the museum.  Students will share their experience with the Design and Engineering Process through class discussion and by publishing a digital record of the DEP on Seesaw.

This lesson is for grades 4-5 on literacy. This resource contains resources that will help students understand that writers use different structures to organize nonfiction texts and that readers need to know a variety of reading strategies appropriate for the text and their purpose for reading such text. Reading strategies to use before, during, and after reading are shared as well as graphic organizers.

Part 1 of this lesson will teach students about the 5 different types of text structures through videos, slide presentation, discussion, and note-taking. Part 1 will take approximately 5 days.Part 2 of this lesson is a small-group scavener hunt (in the classroom or media center) for examples of each type of text structure. Groups will then present and defend their examples to the class. Part 2 will take 2-3 days.

I first heard of Jigsaw lessons through a ASCD conference session by Audrey Cohan, Andrea Honigsfeld, and Maria Dove. This type of collaborative work seemed perfect for my 4th grade English Learners and I’ve based this lesson off of that concept using a nonfiction article by Scholastic.

Graphic organizers, anchor charts, and lesson ideas are included to teach text structure, which refers to how authors organize information in a text.

Use this lesson to introduce the 5 types of text structure to your students. 

Students can view these slides to help them understand text features better. This resource explains what text features are and provides examples of the following titles; headings; bold and italic print; illustrations and photographs; and captions.

 This is a multi-day culminating activity for Wonders Unit 5 weeks 1&2.  Students will use the Wonders materials provided in the Reading/Writing Companion, as well as their Literature Anthology to identify and describe the water cycle. Students will work together in small groups to make a diagram of the water cycle on construction paper. Students will then use a Makey Makey kit to record a definition and description of each element of the water cycle. Each student in the group will be responsible for coding and recording their specific water cycle element. Groups will need to have four students each, as there are four elements to the water cycle: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection or transpiration.
