This task is an interesting way to have student practice making designs with pattern blocks. Students listen to "Grandfather Tang’s Story". After the story, students select animals from the story to make with the tangrams. A worksheet is provided to show the tangram animals that students can make.

This lesson uses GoMath Chapter 12 Lesson 6 resources and incorporates supplemental digital resources to reinforce lesson objectives.

This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach third graders about counting the number of basic 2d shapes in a composite figure.

In this task, students are given an opportunity to practice composing and decomposing shapes by creating their own puzzle. Students are given a square colored sheet of paper and an envelope. Students cut the square into four pieces and place the pieces in an envelope. Next, students trade puzzles and try to solve each other’s puzzles by reassembling the shapes into a square.

This instructional task gives students a hands-on experience with composing and decomposing geometric figures.

This challenging problem and brainteaser gives students an opportunity to compose and decompose polygons to make rectangles.

Students love to paint and draw. Using Paint Online, students can practice their shapes. Teachers can assign certain shapes and the students will create pictures with those shapes in them.

Students create two identical shapes, draw and write about the new shape they made. They add another shape to the first shape they made and draw and name the shapes. A word bank is provided to assist students with names of shapes as well as an example of how to make, draw, and write about the shapes.

After watching a video story about tangrams, students will explore making shapes with tangrams and then will write a story together that is illustrated with tangram pictures.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
