This lesson is for grades PreK-K on math. At Home Learning Lessons are a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, PBS North Carolina, and the William and Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Each lesson contains a video instructional lesson, a PDF lesson plan with a transcript, and a PDF file of extension activities.

In this assessment task students are given a geoboard and rubberband and are asked to make a square, a triangle and a hexagon. Students can be assessed in a small group or whole class. A checklist and rubric are provided.

This resource describes activities using interactive geoboards to help students identify simple geometric shapes, describe their properties, and develop spatial sense. The first part, Making Triangles, focuses attention on the concept of triangle, helping students understand the mathematical meaning of a triangle and the idea of congruence, or sameness, in geometry. In the next part, Creating Polygons, students make and compare a variety of polygons, describing the salient properties of the shapes they create.

In this lesson, students identify three shapes: circle, square, and triangle. They will bend a pipe cleaner into a shape of their choice and group it with similarly shaped pipe cleaners their classmates have made. They will also be able to identify the colors of their pipe cleaner and group them with similarly colored pipe cleaners.

Students will learn about 2D and 3D shapes.  They will use various materials to build shapes, find shapes in stories and at school, and build pictures with shapes.

Students use rubber bands to make different shapes on their geoboard. Next, they choose one the of the shapes they have made and draw it on geoboard paper. Lastly, students label and describe their shape.

Prior to this lesson, students should have worked with two-dimensional shapes. Additionally, they should have been introduced to three-dimensional shapes and their attributes with the lesson "Guess My Shape".

In this lesson, students will use a variety of materials to build shapes and use math vocabulary to explain their shape.

This packet contains exit tickets for the Kindergarten, Cluster 4 geometry standards. Exit tickets are written responses to questions posed at the end of a lesson. They are brief assessments which allow the teacher to determine student understanding of the concepts and skills taught that day. At the Kindergarten level, a blank copy of the exit ticket should be displayed on the board and read aloud to students. As teacher reads, students work independently on their own copy of the exit ticket.
