In this scenario-based, problem-based learning (PBL) activity, students investigate cloud formation, cloud classification, and the role of clouds in heating and cooling the Earth; how to interpret TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) images and data; and the role clouds play in the Earth’s radiant budget and climate. Students assume the role of weather interns in a state climatology office and assist a frustrated student in a homework assignment. Learning is supported by a cloud in a bottle and an ice-albedo demonstration, a three-day cloud monitoring outdoor activity, and student journal assignments. The hands-on activities require two 2-liter soda bottles, an infrared heat lamp, and two thermometers. The resource includes a teacher's guide, questions and answer key, assessment rubric, glossary, and an appendix with information supporting PBL in the classroom.

This is a PBL project that had students build a "collision contraption" to be used as the basis for understanding the concepts of impulse and momentum. It was specifically designed to help students increase their depth of knowledge of impulse, momentum, and the differences in energy and momentum conservation between elastic and inelastic collisions. The project required students to design, build, and then use as a basis to prove their applied mastery of impulse and momentum, a contraption that would accurately predict the 2-dimensional motion of colliding objects, as well as to demonstrate the value of modern automobile design features in terms of safety. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina honors Physics curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.

In conjunction with reading and studying the novel DRUMS, GIRLS, AND DANGEROUS PIE, students collaborated in a team to create a "booth" to host a Rare Disease Day Expo at the Johnston Medical Mall on Rare Disease Day. Students used tools to complete guided research on their rare disease of choice. With rubric guidelines, they included all of the necessary information to present to the public to create awareness and also encourage advocacy. They had the privilege of receiving a special guest speaker, an advocate for rare disease awareness, and hearing the story of how her own son had the same cancer as the character from the novel.

In this problem-based learning module, students will explore the importance of sleep and the impact sleep has on their lives. During the launch phase students can choose to record sleep data via downloaded apps or in a sleep diary. Days 2 through 4 have students explore the concept and necessity of living organisms need to sleep. On day 2 the participants will take a series of cognitive test for baseline data. Through station rotation and a jigsaw activity learners will become familiar with circadian rhythm and sleeping disorders. Finally, days 5-7 have the students produce a video or infographic to communicate the importance of sleep and its relationship to performance both physically and academically.

In this project, students will explore areas in their school that need “fixing.” It could be anything from an area that needs sprucing up to clubs that could be added to social problems such as bullying. Students will choose one area that they can affect change. The final product will be a persuasive essay to the person/people in charge that could make the change happen.
This project can work for individuals, pairs, or small groups. In younger grades, the class can choose one project and work as a whole group. If you choose this route, each student should be given a specific task to ensure engagement of everyone.
