This is a remix of https://goopennc.oercommons.org/courseware/lesson/192 by Martha Levey and Toni Luther. This is a multi-day unit on Cinderella and the many versions of the fairy tale. Students will listen to/read four versions of Cinderella identifying elements of culture and then compare/contrast two in groups. Then students will perform a reader's theater of one Cinderella story. The whole class will remix the Cinderella story to write a modern-day version that takes into account their own cultures.

AbstractThe purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the factors affecting elementary teacher’s ability to understand the academic needs of their racially, culturally, and ethnically diverse special education students and the ways in which their values and beliefs influenced their use of culturally responsive practices in the special education classroom. The findings from this study are significant because they could add to the knowledge base of strategies to close or eliminate the achievement gap of racially, culturally, and ethnically diverse students in special education programs. Furthermore, these experiences may provide an additional opportunity for local educational agencies (LEAS) to examine the impact of culturally responsive teaching practices on the achievement of RCED students in the special education classroom.

Students will observe how one community in South America makes something wonderful from trash. Students will learn the importance of reducing their trash by actively participating in a trash-sorting activity, and demonstrate the ability to reuse trash by making a "trash to treasure" product. This lesson was developed by Lee Ann Smith as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program.
