This assignment will allow students to dig deeper into a theme/lens of American History 2.  This can be adapted to work with any time period or extended to last the entire semester to see change over time.  Students will incorporate research and writing, technology, and even art.  Students will research the time period through one of the following lenses: Conflict/War, Technology, Government and Policy, American Dream, American Identity.  For use with other units or time periods you could include Business and Economy.Students will create a webpage on a Google Site created by the teacher.  Students must include on their page a summary of their topic, a timeline, a student created video, and a student created visual.

In this scenario-based, problem-based learning (PBL) activity, students investigate cloud formation, cloud classification, and the role of clouds in heating and cooling the Earth; how to interpret TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) images and data; and the role clouds play in the Earth’s radiant budget and climate. Students assume the role of weather interns in a state climatology office and assist a frustrated student in a homework assignment. Learning is supported by a cloud in a bottle and an ice-albedo demonstration, a three-day cloud monitoring outdoor activity, and student journal assignments. The hands-on activities require two 2-liter soda bottles, an infrared heat lamp, and two thermometers. The resource includes a teacher's guide, questions and answer key, assessment rubric, glossary, and an appendix with information supporting PBL in the classroom.

In the spring, 8th grade students are already choosing a track for high school. This is a big decision and it's easier to make when you have created goals for your future. Secondary education is important whether you choose to attend a community college, technical institute, or 4-year university. This unit allows students to explore their future career and evaluate which type of secondary education is the best fit for them. The products leading up the the college fair (interviews, essay, quizzes, etc.) help them make informed decisions.

Collision Course!
Rating
0.0 stars

This is a PBL project that had students build a "collision contraption" to be used as the basis for understanding the concepts of impulse and momentum. It was specifically designed to help students increase their depth of knowledge of impulse, momentum, and the differences in energy and momentum conservation between elastic and inelastic collisions. The project required students to design, build, and then use as a basis to prove their applied mastery of impulse and momentum, a contraption that would accurately predict the 2-dimensional motion of colliding objects, as well as to demonstrate the value of modern automobile design features in terms of safety. Note that the project was designed and delivered per the North Carolina honors Physics curriculum and it can be customized to meet your own specific curriculum needs and resources.

In conjunction with reading and studying the novel DRUMS, GIRLS, AND DANGEROUS PIE, students collaborated in a team to create a "booth" to host a Rare Disease Day Expo at the Johnston Medical Mall on Rare Disease Day. Students used tools to complete guided research on their rare disease of choice. With rubric guidelines, they included all of the necessary information to present to the public to create awareness and also encourage advocacy. They had the privilege of receiving a special guest speaker, an advocate for rare disease awareness, and hearing the story of how her own son had the same cancer as the character from the novel.

While studying the Articles of Confederation government and the Constitutional Convention in this problem-based learning module, the students will determine the benefits of peacefully changing an inept government. They will deduce the crucial steps needed for peaceful change to happen within a society. An area of research will be chosen to help solve a problem critical to the students' middle school lives. Feedback will be gathered through a video interview or a Google Form survey of crucial stakeholders. Students will research the alternatives to improve upon their selected problem. Students will present their findings to a decision maker and wait to receive feedback.

In this problem-based learning (PBL) activity, students take on the role of a student research scientist and explore the role of solar energy in determining climate, focusing on the urban heat island effect. Students conduct research and compare temperatures between two cities, and determine the factors that are responsible for the difference exhibited between them. The lesson is supported by teacher notes, answer key, glossary and an appendix with information about using PBL in the classroom. This is the third of three activities in Investigating the Climate System: Energy, a Balancing Act, and serves as an authentic assessment for all three modules.

Students explore multiple forms of digital etiquette and citizenship. They research current events based around digital concerns and innovations. Eventually, they apply that knowledge to their own lives and use of technology to develop 5 top guidelines for digital device usage for their peers. Students share their presentations and projects in an exhibit-style venue. Using a survey, students vote for their top choices, eventually selecting one choice to implement.Standards:CCSS English Language Arts (Grade 8) Ohio Standards for Technology

In this problem-based learning module, students will investigate why is it important that students be careful what is posted for everyone to see. Students will investigate and discuss these questions during this module that directly relate to their daily life. Students will work cooperatively in groups to design an infomercial to be presented to elementary students and/or parents and community members. Key Learning Targets: I can use technology to produce and publish my work, and link to sources. I can include multimedia projects or visual displays when they will be helpful in clarifying and emphasizing information. I can actively participate and contribute to a discussion with my teacher and my peers. I can present my findings to a group or audience in a clear and concise way. I can create a storyboard to prepare a public service announcement. I can compare contrast trends of technology. In this problem-based learning module, students will explore the importance of sleep and the impact sleep has on their lives. During the launch phase students can choose to record sleep data via downloaded apps or in a sleep diary. Days 2 through 4 have students explore the concept and necessity of living organisms need to sleep. On day 2 the participants will take a series of cognitive test for baseline data. Through station rotation and a jigsaw activity learners will become familiar with circadian rhythm and sleeping disorders. Finally, days 5-7 have the students produce a video or infographic to communicate the importance of sleep and its relationship to performance both physically and academically.

NOTE: This project was designed for an AVID course. The platform did not allow that selection, which is why it is tied to Career Development. Open the resource to see the specific AVID standards taught and assessed through the unit.

Since students were little they have been asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Too often the answers are limited to the careers of parents or the professionals with whom the student has had some kind of contact: in essence, the standard response of doctor, lawyer, police officer.

This project was designed to assist students in identifying skill sets and interests and then understanding their relationships to careers and career clusters.

Using technology, students take interest surveys and explore both broad career clusters and specific careers. From their research they create career infographics for presentation and display within the school.

In this project, students explore the use of masks in various world cultures, learning about the origins, purpose, and use of masks in rituals, performances, fashion, occupations, etc. They consider how masks function as objects to enhance beauty and appearance, provide protection or concealment, display power, or indicate change and transformation.

Students use what they learn about masks to inform a reflection on the ways that they “wear masks” in their own lives, and the different “faces” they put on for themselves and others. They create a mask that artistically represents one of these faces and present it as part of a collaborative exhibition.

Students explore different abilities of characters in a literature study of five different novels. Students select their own novel based on interest and readability, conduct research, and create a presentation on the disability of the character(s) in their novel. In addition, students visit an adaptive special education classroom to observe, interact and participate in learning with differently-abled peers. Students collaborate to communicate results of their research with peers, parents, and staff. They are visited by representatives from an organization such as Canine Companions for Independence to learn about how their organization works to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

This is a PBL meant for grade levels 4-8. In this project, students will explore areas in their school that need “fixing.” It could be anything from an area that needs sprucing up to clubs that could be added to social problems such as bullying. Students will choose one area that they can affect change. The final product will be a persuasive essay to the person/people in charge that could make the change happen.

This project can work for individuals, pairs, or small groups. In younger grades, the class can choose one project and work as a whole group. If you choose this route, each student should be given a specific task to ensure engagement of everyone.

This activity is designed for 4-5 class periods. It can be shortened or lengthened as needed.

The standards given are for 6th grade, but the same number standards work for any of the other grade levels. Adjust accordingly.
