These resources accompany our Rethink 1st Grade ELA course. They include ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.
This unit was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 1st Grade ELA.
In this activity students identify the different relationships that can be found in a community and create a class Community ABC Book.
To launch: Read “Albert’s Alphabet” by Leslie Tryon Students will then “build” the letters of their name using provided materials or you can assign groups of students letters, so that the class can “build” the alphabet.
Students can practice writing all upper and lowercase letters.
Students can use this resource to view and practice correct letter formation.
In this lesson, students will be introduced to Family Message Journals. The teacher introduces journals by demonstrating the process of writing a letter. Students are then led into composing through guided writing and finally independent writing of messages that they will bring home for family (or others) to read and write a reply. Messages focus on classroom learning and activities in which children have participated at school. A letter to families is included so that they understand what they are expected to do with the children's daily journal messages and why.
In this lesson, a combination of children's literature, learning centers, and activities focus on learning about the letter m. Students will learn about phonics by participating in an integrated array of activities, including reading, writing, mathematics, music, art, and technology.
In this lesson, students will learn to identify letters and words by exploring one another's names and other words. Each student gets to be "Student of the Day," and the class will explore his or her name and life. Students will learn which letters are in their classmate's name, as well as the words for their friend's hobbies and favorite things. Students will be encouraged to draw and write messages to each other on a daily basis.
