These resources accompany our Rethink 1st Grade ELA course. They include ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning.

In this video, students join Super Readers as they help bake a cake by following directions. Students learn that the steps to baking are to get the ingredients, measure and mix, and then bake. With the assistance of Alpha Pig, the Super Readers are able to use their spelling skills to find the ingredients necessary to make the cake. Alpha Pig is able to identify the different ingredients on the shelf by looking for the first letter of the word.

Students engage in games and chants to recognize the same sounds in different words. Students match objects with the same beginning or ending sound, identify whether a given sound occurs at the beginning or ending of a word, and connect phonemes with graphemes.

In this lesson, shared reading, guided reading, and small, cooperative-group instruction are used in a first-grade classroom to informally assess students' ability to demonstrate awareness of rhyme or other visual similarities in words. Students practice matching rhyming words using picture cards and apply phonological awareness—hearing rhyme—to analogy-based phonics (i.e., an ability to decode unknown words by identifying words with similar visual structure). Students use online resources to increase phonological awareness through rhyme.

Students will identify rhyming words; brainstorm rhyming words; create song verses; and practice rhyming using an online interactive tool.

These activities provide examples of one-on-one student assessments that can be done informally in the classroom. Students will focus on the concepts of print as well as phonics.

ABCya! presents its fifth children's storybook for the classroom. It's called Marvin Makes Music, an original work by Michelle Tocci. The story is about a frog that is sad because he cannot sing like his friends, until one day when he gets a new musical instrument. This is a great storybook to share with kids using an interactive whiteboard.

In this lesson, students become familiar with the short /u/ sound as they listen to Taro Yashima’s Caldecott Honor-winning book, Umbrella. Prereading activities build vocabulary and comprehension skills, a read-aloud introduces students to the sounds of the story, and concluding exercises allow students to apply their understanding of phonic elements in other contexts.

In this lesson, students read words found on everyday objects and use them to identify individual letters. They then create captions for an electronic book with preselected logos and illustrations. Finally, they create an original little book choosing their own logos, captions, and images.

In this lesson, students will learn to identify letters and words by exploring one another's names and other words. Each student gets to be "Student of the Day," and the class will explore his or her name and life. Students will learn which letters are in their classmate's name, as well as the words for their friend's hobbies and favorite things. Students will be encouraged to draw and write messages to each other on a daily basis.

Using this Super WHY! video episode, students learn how to figure out clues using the story of "The Beach Day Mystery". Students will follow the alphabet, rhyme with -AIL words, and use the power to read to change the story! Whyatt and the other fairytale buddies have found a clue leading to treasure and they need a little help! The Super Readers fly into "The Beach Day Mystery" where they set off on a swashbuckling scavenger hunt adventure filled with clues, pirates, and of course, treasure!

Using this Super WHY! vidseo episode, students see the importance of making friends using the story of The "Three Little Pigs". Students also have the opportunity to practice the alphabet, identify the letters W, O, L and F, rhyme using words from the "ALL" family and use opposites to change the meaning of the story. Students follow along as Pig is building towers with blocks and Jill keeps knocking them down. The Super Readers fly into "The Three Little Pigs" story to have a discussion with the Big Bad Wolf, who certainly knows a thing or two about knocking things down. When all the huffing and puffing is done, Pig learns an important lesson about friendship.
