This informal assessment checks the student's understanding about the parts of a book or story, where to start and stop reading, and punctuation. The assessment should be performed one-on-one with the student.

In this beginning of the year activity, students will use a word/letter finder to identify and differentiate letters and words.

In this activity, students develop book-handling skills-holding the book right-side up, turning pages correctly, and following text from left to right and page to page.

Students will learn the organization and basic features of print, including how to follow words on a page.

In this activity, students join in on a choral read of A Fun Day and note how words are read from left to right.

These activities provide examples of one-on-one student assessments that can be done informally in the classroom. Students will focus on the concepts of print as well as phonics.

ABCya! presents its fifth children's storybook for the classroom. It's called Marvin Makes Music, an original work by Michelle Tocci. The story is about a frog that is sad because he cannot sing like his friends, until one day when he gets a new musical instrument. This is a great storybook to share with kids using an interactive whiteboard.

The "unpacking" of the standards done in this document is an effort to answer a simple question, "What does this standard mean that a student must know and be able to do?" and to ensure the description is helpful, specific and comprehensive for educators.

This assessment and remediation guide contains resources (lessons, worksheets, games, songs, progress monitoring, and more) to develop a student's phonological awareness by determining a student's need(s).

In this activity, students demonstrate awareness of reading words from left to right and page by page.

In this lesson, students will use a weekly poem to explore meaning, sentence structure, rhyming words, sight words, vocabulary, and print concepts. After studying the poem, students are given a copy of the poem to illustrate and share their understanding. All of the poems explored are then compiled into a poetry portfolio for students to take home and share with their families. To further connect home to school, a family poetry project is suggested.

In this activity, students develop the skilll of following text from one line to the next or "return sweep".

This lesson uses predictable text and a repetitive format to help students learn high-frequency words. Students develop fluency as they participate in a choral reading of the predictable text.
