Each team has a budget of $45 to spend to modify a cup into the ultimate predator. After predators are constructed, students battle to pop each others’ balloons. Whichever predator is able to survive is the apex predator.

Day 1- Teacher will begin lesson by going over the learning purpose - that the weight of an object after an interaction is the same weight it would be before (the sum of parts equals the whole). Students will be given a small canvas (i.e. - small cloth canvas, cardstock, cardboard, etc.). Teachers will allow students to use various materials to create a masterpiece (i.e. - paint, buttons, pom poms, etc.). Each group would be tasked to weigh objects BEFORE adding them to their masterpiece (for paint or other consumables - weight bottle before and after use). Students would TRY to prove the teacher wrong by saying that the sum of their masterpiece was greater or less than the sum of its parts. Day 2 - Students would present whether they proved the teacher right or wrong, then peers would analyze their work by asking clarifying questions.

Using the materials- balloons, straws, string, tape, and weights students will design a rocket that will travel to a certain distance such as between 4 and 5 meters. Students will measure the distance of their attempts and record results. They will design a balloon rocket that will travel to the target area and not beyond by discovering the relationship between force and mass.

This is an end of the year culminating project . Students will work on their own or in pairs to create a house that will help their family to survive the climate of a randomly chosen location. Students will use their knowledge or ecosystems, heating and cooling, and weather prediction and tracking to determine the proper supplies that will be needed to build a house for survival. The project will include weather research, house build planning, creating a mock-up, and presentation to the class. The project will conclude with a video detailing what they would change after collaboration with the class.

This roadmap is designed to help students track their progress/proficiency with NC 5th Grade Science Standards. Students can use the fill color tool to visually present their progress/proficiency for the standard on each road sign. This resource was developed as part of a professional learning opportunity funded by the NCDPI Digital Learning Initiative Planning Grant.

This learning plan gives students choice in selecting activitites to learn, practice, and show evidence of learning about the water cycle based upon NC 5th Grade Science Standards. This resource was developed as part of a professional learning opportunity funded by the NCDPI Digital Learning Initiative Planning Grant.

This lesson combines the science standards for force and motion with an engineering activity. Students will design a car from cardboard straws. Coffee stirs tape, balloon, and bottle lids. ( students can choose which types of wheels). Students will race the cars with classmates to determine which is the fastest.

This unit is loaded with phenomena. The real world task of being a member of Oregon's Energy Commission that must create a 50-Year Energy Plan propels students through a learning arc that includes electricity, magnetism, power production, and climate science. After the Request for a 50-Year Energy Plan students jigsaw energy sources and power production. They need to understand the basic physics of how generators works leads us to build and explore motors (starting with speakers which also connect to the Waves & Technology unit) and inefficient generators (electric guitars). The need for large amounts of energy and efficient generators motivates us to engineer wind turbines and optimize solar cells for a local facilities use. Creating the rubric to evaluate large scale power production launches us into climate science. With all the learning of the unit students and many real world constraints student finally complete, compare, and evaluate their 50-Year Energy Plan.
